It was indeed a great concert, Sahana/Giripai being the high point. Both RK Srirramkumar and Neyveli Narayanan provided brilliant support. Other highlights items were RTP in Shanmukhapriya, Siva Siva in Pantuvarali and Yarukkuthan in Devamanohari. Almost a 4 hour concert!
It was good to catch up with Prashant, his family and Arunkumar Sridharan. Prashant took notes so request him to send in the list/review when time permits...

Eranapai (Todi Varnam), Siva Siva (Pantuvarali), Yarukkutan (Devamanohari), Kantimatim (Kalyani - Subbarama Dikshitar), Inta Prabhuva (Mohanam - Vijaya Dasa), Giripai (Sahana), Sadachaleswaram (Bhupalam), RTP (Shanmukhapriya), Himagiri Tanaye (Shuddhadhanyasi), Modijese (Khamas Javali), Tiruvaippanindu...
Gopalan, that's roughly the songlist (may not be in the right order) as I understood from a brief telecon with Sowmya earlier today. I believe she sang alapanas for Devamanohari, Sahana and Shanmukhapriya. The Kalyani & Sahana were requests from our fellow-forumite Arunkumar Sridharan. Maybe he or Prashant can fill us in with more details.

The songlist is exactly as Sri Ramanathan posted. The highlights for me were the lovely AlApanA in dEvamanOhari [very scholarly with a great flow and an iron grip on the intricacies of this raga[, the pATantaram of giripai [great sangatis in the pallavi] and the tAnam in shaNmukhapriyA [punchy and weighty]. I thoroughly enjoyed this concert which was enhanced greatly by the ever-supportive Sri Shriramkumar and Sri Neyveli Narayanan whose nAdam and following for songs was just outstanding.

Curious if you know which krithis had swarakalpana, and any comments on it?prashant wrote:The songlist is exactly as Sri Ramanathan posted. Hi all, I dont know if I am eligible to comment.. but i would still carry on... The concert supposed to start at 7pm started half an hour late.. Thanks to Maharashtra Governor, chief guest of the function coming late.. As already told.. she started the concert with thodi varnam and sang in two speeds.. The sound effect, atleast in the balcony was horrible.tooo noisy. It was too uncomfortable in the beginning and slowly improved but still remained unsatisfactory. siva siva was a let down becoz alapana sketch was only given and swaram singing was not all that impressive or orderly.. all the other pieces were good but devamanohari stood out.. alapana was excellent swaram singing at 1/2 eduppu before samam was very well handled. sahana alapana went well but not swaram. She sang shanmughapriya ragam well, neither thanam nor pallavi was impressive.pallavi was in some sorts incomplete. Both RK shriram kumar and Neyveli narayanan supported well but when sriram kumar played in the upper octave the volume/sharpness of mike made it tooo uncomfortable, atleast where i was sitting. But she showed her vidwat in all her alapanas..

Forgot to add.. her song selection was great, as usual.. no doubt about it.. Both Ghatam and tambura had equal volume... Ghatam artist hardly played. I think... not sure.. sorry if i get it wrong here.. There were many places in the tani - especially the koraippu which neither fit with the eduppu of the pallavi... that is 6 aksharas from the second veechu in adhi talam nor fit in samam.. If i remember correctly both in some places played 2 aksharam from veechu.. I may be wrong here... did some body note this???

The sound system was just perfect where I was sitting - in the balcony. With Vignesh on the ghatam...wasn't the vidwan's best day and Neyveli Narayanan had a hard time coping - a pity given how brilliantly Narayanan was playing, as Prashant rightly notes....Shanmukhapriya was decent enough althgouh Devamanohari and Sahana were the really special ones...but the taanam I thought had a lot of weight and depth...

In most of the places, the mikes are not as good as this.. Mike produces a high frequency noise by itself when it senses the incoming high frequency signal.. But this did not happen here.. But the mike was set too loud and the sharpness was too high, I felt. So technically, not poor acoustics but poor setting.. So when RKS played in 1st string, the higher sa, It was very very bad. Overall mike also I think it was over amplified considering this is a closed structure and a female artist is singing - at Fsharp/G pitch. How about the other concerts, priya sisters and TVS at the same venue??vijay wrote:The sound system was just perfect where I was sitting - in the balcony.

Thank you!! I suspect the kavadi chindu is either Bharathiyar's or Annamalai Reddiar's. The composition in Durga is by Vaadiraja apparently.arunsri wrote:1. ErA nApai - tODi varnam - ADi - paTnam (S)
