Violin : Shri TN Krishnan (TNK) supported by Smt Viji Krishnan
Mrudangam : Shri Thiruvarur Bhakthavatsalam
Ghatam : Shri Vaikom Gopalakrishnan
This is a concert I attended last week at Indian Fine Arts-German Hall on the occasion of GNB Day. The customary speeches and felicitations dragged on and on and the concert started only at about 7:30.
Song List:
1) Maakelara - Ravichandrika - OS
2) Manasa Etulo - Malayamarutham - ANS
3) Himagiri Thanaye - Shudha Dhanyasi - A
4) Brocheva - Khamas - AST
5) Dikku Theriyadha - Ragamalika
6) A Surutti piece and a Sindubhairavi Krithi
7) Mangalam
The only interesting point in the speeches was made by TNK when he said that present-day artistes have a lot more concerts and he doesn't want to go into the debate whether that is good or bad. And he made a remark that he actually makes a conscious effort not to get influenced by the numerous forms of music that he sees around him these days. He said it is indeed a pracice that one shuts his/her ears to such stuff so as not to get influenced by such music unconsciously!
The concert was good. The Ravichandrika was a great start. The Khamas main which was a request was rendered well. The Swarams had Viji playing some rapid fire phrases like Chembai. But the pick of the concert, to me, was the Malayamarutham. He showed his greatness in the Alapanai there. Was really touching. That made my day.
The percussion support was good.
The usual TNK-specials of Surutti and Sindubhairavi were there as well.
A pity that there was only so much time for the actual concert.

Satej,
You say: pity there was only so much time for the actual concert.
That too for the concert of such a veteran. In the name of GNB (a great vidvAn), asking another great vidvAn to play, and then begin the concert at that late hour! The veteran was getting tired and the rasikAs waited impatiently. GNB might not have liked his day celebrated that way, I'm afraid.
TNK's music would have said it more eloquently. Having accompanied GNB in so many concerts, he would have been inspired by the memory of the great man and his violin would have spoken more eloquently than those lengthy speeches.
Still, that malayamArutam was soothing, I am sure...

I also attended the function. The concert was as to be expected great. But in response to the felicitation arranged by IFAS on his nearing 80years ,the humility with which he responded was some thing the present artists who do not possess even an iota of vidwat that he possesses was worthy of emulation. It was sad that only very few artists did attend this function. The remarks of Chinglepet Shri Ranganathan on GNB and Shri TNK was something that came out rather emotionally. The response of Shri TNK was that it was all due to the blessings of his Gurus and all the senior veterans whom he accompanied their blessings and their words of wisdom followed till date was what made him what he is today... What a humble response from such a musical giant.... This is something that the present day artists should imbibe ...but alas it is wishful thinking... Bye Ragjay
