As a part of the Vasantha Ganam Series, N S T S S Nanganallur, featured the disciples of four eminent masters.:- Vijayalakshmi Rajaram ( Thanjavur Sankara Iyer), Varalakshmi Anandkumar (D K Jayaraman), Vasumathi Desikan ( A Sundaresan) and Sivapriya Krishnan ( R. Vedavalli).
Vijayalakshmi Rajaram , who sang on the 13th May, sang a stupendous Thodi fully based on the Veena tradition, revealing many facets of the raga which are seldom heard except from her Guru .. The grandeur of Gajavadana. with its engaging chitta swaras was fully brought out. The main piece was the unparalled beauteous creation of Subbaraya Sastri -- Ninnu Vina Gathi Kana (Kalyani) with neraval and Swaras at Vinuthapalinini. Melacauvery Thiagarajan and Thillaisthanam Suriyanarayanan heightened the musical effect.
Singing with a full throated voice, Varalakshmi Anandakumar offered highly enjoyable classical music reminiscent of her mentor on May 13th..The joie de vivre, so characeristic of her Guru, marked the entire presentation. Siva Siva Siva ena radha (Pantuvarali), Raghupathe Rama (Sahana) in the style made popular by her Guru, a fully rounded Karaharapriya followed by Pakkala Nilabadi were the higL;ights of the performance. Sung without raga elaboration or swaras, the haunting mood of the krithi of Papanasam Sivan Enathu manam kavaliyil vizhndal (Harikambodhi) was just enchanting. Kalyani Shankar on the Violin and the unassailable Kallidaikurichi Sivakumar on the mrudangam embellished the concert.
Vasumathi Desikan who sang on May 14, reminded the listeners of the classical values that marked the music of her Guru.. With a voice fully under control she sang expansive raga elaborations of Dhanyasi (Balakrishnan Padhamalar), Simmhendramadhyamam (Ninne Nammiti) and a rousing Kambodhi ( O Rangasayee) . The entire concert was marked by strict adherence to the classical values and elegance in presentation of the krithis.and swara patterns. Akkarai Swarnalatha 's play on the violin fell sweetly on the ears and the accompaniment by Kumbakonam Swaminathan on the mridangam was robust and supportive.
Sivapriya Krishnan, who sang on the 15th May ,proved herself a worthy disciple of her illustrious Guru. Pristine Classicism, impeccable padanthara and the unhurried singing bringing out the beauty of the ragas and the sahitya, marked the entire performance. Bhuvinidasuda (Sriranjani), Mati Mati (Mohanam), Arunachla Natham (Saranga) and a grand Sankarabharanam (Enduku Pethala) were among the krithis that were chosen for the presentation of a highly satisfying musical effort. Nandini on the violin and Arjun Ganesh on the mridangam ensured that the classical mood prevailed.
S.V Ramani and Nanganallur Ramanathan , the motive force behind N S T S S , deserve fulsome praise in ensuring the continuance of the different streams of classical music presentation.

Thanks for the review, Jagan.
This is the kind of concert that interests me. Great masters and the variety of their mArgam reflected in their pupils!
Sivan's kruti that Varalakshmi Anandakumar sang was 'enadu manam kavalai enum iruL SUZhndAl evariDam muRAi iDuvEn? en SaivEn? A striking song--though I feel that Sivan would have meant it to be 'enadu manadil' (not manam) and there was a printer's devil which came to stay (we have discussed this before in the sAhityA section!).
