Smt Kalapagam Swaminathan's concert: Veena Sheshanna Award Function at Bangalore Gayana Samaja: July 20th

At 87, the grand old lady was in her elements. The grip over the instrument at that age is truly amazing.
Both GamakaKriya (Poorvi Kalyani) and Dharmavati Ragams were just soaked with bhavam.
One could hear her singing the sahityam now and then. It was an excellent musical treat for 90 minutes or so on a Sunday morning. Big thanks to the organizers for arranging this classic concert.

Cheluvaraj's accompaniment on mridangam was very good.

Post the concert, she received the "Veena Sheshanna' Memorial award. Rudrapatnam Brothers recieved the 'VN Rao" Memorial award

hmm we missed this

Me and braindrain reached the venue thinking that the concert was at 11.30,but it had started at 10.
We were present for the award presentation ceremony.

definitely a big miss.

And I missed the evening concert by Rudrapatnam brothers

I could attend Malladi Brothers though I arrived little late for that. It is pouring in Bangalore nowadays !!!!.

very nice list as well...

gauLipantu is one of mami's benchmarks. its always a treat to hear mami play compositions like viribhONi or krishNAnanda.

and, i do remember mami telling about this dharmavati song and tillana. she had learnt the dharmanvathi song for the occasion.

I had the good fortune to be present there to hear the Divine Music offered by Kalpakam Mami and witness the Award fuction later..
Those present had the rare occasion to hear the excellence of the Thanjavur Bhani. This is the first time i hear the Dharmavathi composition of Veena Seshanna. Mami said that she considered it would be appropriate to present the krithi on the occasion of the Veena Seshanna Award to her and had learnt it recently. Amazing.
Raga elaborations were offered for Devakriya, and Dharmavathi. The Thillana too was preceded by a brief alapana .
It was surprising to know tha Gayana Samaja was established even in 1905 and has the distinction to be the oldest organisation serving the cause of Carnatic Music.
The Award function was a very impressive one. But even though all but Mr. Murali, President of the Music Academy , Chennai spoke in Kannada , their extraordinary devotion to cause of Music and the reverence with which they treated Mami was really heartwarming.
