Dear members,

Save our earth of global warming.
what a nice gesture by the Lalgudi's.
Read today's Hindu at the following location

http://www.hindu.com/2008/08/07/stories ... 900200.htm

Really nice of Lalgudi Shri.Jayaraman and GJR Krishnan for taking up a great cause and creating awareness.

When i congratulated GJR Sir he mentioned to me "Please spread the word about the cause and not about ME". What a gentleman and too fitting for the cause.
Let us all join hands and support this cause tomorrow.

The newspaper picture is lovely: it is great to see Lalgudi Jayaram sitting there, adding his presence (which is notable, even in a photograph, and even without a violin in his hands) to the cause.

Right. Commenting is one thing: I must think too, then actually do. After all, lowering one's own electricity bill is an immediate outcome!

There was a poster campaign in UK some years back: just a picture of a light switch, and the words, "When people talk about gloval warming, do you turn off?". Clever :)

Here's more about the Power of Silence campaign written about in the Hindu report:

In a bid to sensitize people the world-over about the ill-effects of global warming and the need to preserve nature, Exnora International, Sri Krishna Sweets and the Global Carnatic Music Association (GCMA) have come up with a unique concept. On the 8th of August (08-08-2008), between 08:00:08 am and 08:08:08 am, numerous celebrities will come together to observe 8 minutes of silence and listen only to the sounds of nature. This event will take place on the Marina beach, near the Gandhi statue.

Exnora International, Chennai, headed by M.B.Nirmal, has been actively involved in many environment-related projects in the past, like organizing conferences on voluntary reduction of industrial pollutants, co-ordinating neighborhood tree plantings, promoting sanitation projects, restoring urban estuaries and encouraging environmental education in schools and colleges. Sri Krishna Sweets, under the leadership of N.Murali, has been working towards numerous social causes and has been a role-model for the society. The Global Carnatic Music Association, founded by musicians K.N.Shashikiran and Sudha Ragunathan, has been a pioneer of several innovative programs, including the recently concluded 100-hour marathon concert in Chennai.

This unique event, called ‘The Power of Silence’ and conceptualized by K.N.Shashikiran, aims to create a mini-revolution world-wide, against global warming and other activities which are destroying our environment. The organizers hope to spread the message to as many people as possible, since concerted effort is the need of the hour.

The organizers invite the public to join them at 7:45 am on the 8th of August at the Marina beach, for this fight against environmental deterioration. Those who are unable to make it to the Marina, can observe 8 minutes of silence from their homes/workplaces.

Celebrities who will participate in the event include M.B.Nirmal of Exnora, Murali of Sri Krishna Sweets, musicians Sudha Ragunathan and Shashikiran, director Vasanth, Mrs. Y.G.Parthasarathy, Sreekala Bharath and Nirmala Prasad, Principal, MOP Vaishnav college.

Out of my ignorance, how does this silence help in the global warming as so many will be driving to the beach early in the morning which itself will be polluting the environment? Can this silence be not followed at each one's home? I apologize if I am hurting anybody's sentiments? India is already reeling under gruesome power cut and why this power off for 8 minutes?

In Bangalore, the usual power cut is for 6 hrs. In order to join the campaign, we are increasing the 'power cut' time to 8 hrs 8 minutes today.

We heard that there was power shortage; we had power cuts exactly 1.00pm to 2.00pm for a few days, then it is all over, and back to the usual random outages.

If I go on, then I will be politicking --- and that is not what any of us come to this music forum for!
