The alluring power of good music is that it can make one oblivious of the immediate surroundings. The human ear and mind adjust themselves to set aside outside distractions to enjoy the overwhelming good music ..
Amrita Murali sang for Raja Annamalaipuram Cultural Association at the Narayani Ammal Kalyana Mantapam.. The acoustics of this Hall is a horror. Intolerable level of.echo. The blaring car horns and the clatter of the road are a source of recurring disturbance.. One wondered what enjoyment could be had from the music concert.
When I went in, Meru Samana was in progress. Listening to the music was a difficult exercise. But then followed some great music in which one lost himself and was impervious to all else. Himachala Thanaya Bro., an absorbing Begada followed by Thyagarajaya Namasthe with crisp swaras, the haunting melody of Tsallare, a brisk Brova Bharama, a leisurely exploration of Kanada brimming with excellent sancharas, followed by Sukhi Evvaro ( neraval and swaras at Nithya Maina ), Madhava Maya in Hamsanandi and Raamanai Tharuvai in Sindhu Bhairavi contributed to great listening pleasure.
Perhaps this was in main due to the relaxed manner in which the music was offered in a voice that was vibrant yet melodious. It seems reasonable to expect more of such good music, bordering on excellence, from Amritha Murali.
She could not have been more fortunate in her accompaniments. L. Ramakrishnan on the violin was all melody combined with deep insight and understanding. His raga essays were a delight. Sankaranarayanan on the mridangam was softness personified and added laya beauty at every stage. One could not believe that he can produce this effect in a hall of Echoes.
Extraordinary and memorable music. .
