SuryaprakAsh@Swamy's hall on Jan10th,2009
----------------------------------------
Accompanied by RK ShrirAm kumar - violin , neyveli nArAyaNan - mridangam and kanjira - papAnAsam sethurAman

1. siva siva yenarAdhA (RS,S)- pantuvarAli - T
2A. viruththam "nAlai enra nalla NALLiL??" - mOhanam -???
2b. thillai darisaNam kaNdArku - mOhanam - GKB

3. jaya jaya padmanAbha (R S)- sarasAngi - ST
4. mAmava meenAkshi(N) - varAli - MD
neraval in "Shyame Shankari Digvijaya Pratapini"
5. sarasa sAma dhAna (N,S) - kApinArAyani - T
neraval in "hitavu mATalentO bAgA balkitivi "

....
....

8. oru nAl oru pozhudAgilum - mishra kamAs-neelakanta shivan
9A.viruththam veyuru thOLi paNgan - kOlurupadhigam
in rAgas sindhubhairavi+ shuruTTi + jOnpuri
9B. eppO varuvArO - jOnpuri - GKB

All the above numbers were consistently very good to excellent , liked the vilamba kAla neraval of varAli for 6 minutes and the immediate sequencing of kApi nArayani neraval and swaras for 10 minutes , both showcasing not just the musical excellance of suryaprakAsh, but equally the response of RKSK and nArayanan . IIRC,Heard for the first time the mOhanam krithi and was superbly presented.

The first number in pantuvarAli did not come out well as it lost a lot with violin volume and mridangist adjustment. To that extent I would blame SuryaprakAsh in taking this racy number as a first one , I personally feel I need the first varnam atleast for the sake of right sound adjustment ;)

6A. yArO ivar yArO(R N S T) - bhairavi - AK
rAga alApanai for 17 minutes , violin return - 5 minutes ,9 minutes of neraval and
neraval in "anda nALil tondam pOlE urugirAr inda nALil vandu sEvai tarugirAr"
6B. tani for 10 minutes

7. RTP in kApi
rAga alApanai for 9 minutes
TAna rAgamAligai in kApi + lalitA + vAchaspathi + shanmughapriyA + hamsadhwani for 12 minutes
pallavi line "maNda hAsa vadaNA harE krishnA" - swaras only in kApi

The best number was the above two . A very detailed nAdaswara bAni alApanai in the most expansive bhairavi and very perfect diction in this thamizh krithi . The creativity in the neraval line was just awesome(has anyone taken this neraval in this line than the time tested chandra bimbam). The neraval lines were spaced beautifully the first phrase "anda nALil tondam pOlE urugirAr " getting mel kAlam bhairavi exposition with "inda nALil vandu sEvai tarugirAr" getting the keezh kAlam bhairavi alankAram. Swaras continued in two idam one in anda and the other in inda in two speeds ,than a long wrap for another full 5 minutes was brilliant . The violinst played the bhairavi return beautifully.

SuryaprakAsh RTP in KApi was outstanding . A very energetic kApi that just reminded me of 1980's mahAvidwan TNS sir,the tAna rAga mAliga alternated in 5 rAgas , he said he sang with the comfort zone that RKSK provided and indeed the whole tAnam affair was stunning and brilliant . Incidentally he told the tAnam in lalitA and vAchaspathi was emphasing in two dhaivatams and shanmughapriyA + hamsadhwani emphasised in two nishAdams, all rAgas were quite elaborate.

The pallavi was very good and swaras in kApi were excellent, though bit short. The tani was just bit mediocre. Incidentally I had a chance to talk to RKSK and asked him if he knew the tAna rAgas , he said no and it was on spot reply, I was just curious there if they had rehearsed before.I have not seen RKSK playing for suryaprakAsh though a decade before they toured overseas together, perhaps that was another big highlight.

Overall an excellent concert :), the first pantuvarAli was a definite minus. ;)
