srinivAsrgn had a fictitious lalgudi jaya Raman playing violin instead of the maestro LGJ. Well in real life too at times it just happens. How it happens?

I read the hindu paper in the morning where it was put nArayana theertha day gorakavi sampath kumAr vocal concert ? But was it vocal concert , no it was a devotional concert.

Brief review about the concert:
--------------------------------
nArayana theerthAr is perhaps a difficult composer as his compositions are more suited for dance (has lot of nAttuvangam like phrases),drama, lyrical expressions (which I have no chance to know) and musical classicism. I think the challenge for any musician is to overcome the dance like phrases and keep it to an average ,minimally reduce the dramatic dose and present music .

There are atleast 3 nArayana Theerthar that were concert worthy as much as say mamava mAdhava, they are marked with the *. Rest were more like devotional numbers . pAppu venugOpal rao spoke briefly about NT, i forgot a lot about this concert, since I spent all my days till monday banging on Arun's crossword puzzle. I will recollect few points about NT that venugOpal rao shared little later .

Overall a mediocre concert from this vidwan from ongole.

Rajesh, What a diverse range of concerts you attend!
Thank you for your coverage of a kacheri that would have otherwise been obscured by the more popular concert events.

While you are right about the way Narayana theerthar's tarangams have become dance standards, especially in Kuchipudi (for e.g. Krishnam kalaya sakhi in Mukhari) or tail-enders in regular kacheris (like Govindham iha - Bageshri), there are many of his compositions that deserve to be brought out into the mainstream with prominent pride of place in a concert.

Sikkil Gurucharan's recording of NT's compositions (Charsur, 2007) is a good example of how a musician has overcome, as you say, the dance-ish phrases to present them in a classical mode. However, he does Sharanam bhava karuna mayi in Sowrashtram. It has all the weighty appeal of a Ninnujoochi or Ranganathude.

Do you know anything about the background of this vidwan? This is the first time I have heard of him.

mahavishnu,
I have no idea about the background of this vidwan. Thanks for your reference of NT's compositions.

IIRC there is a wonderful rendition of balaji shankar that i bought where he has sung this same composition of this jaya jaya swami in nAttai. Though sampath kumar brought in lot of suddadhanyAsi phrases mixed up in nAttai.

Incidentally there was not even one nAdanAmakriya composition in this concert which was a poor miss in my opinion , just as say not hearing anandabhairavi in shayama sastri exclusive concert

thanks, Rajesh. I saw the hindu review just after I read yours! I might have just skipped it if it hadn't been for being primed by your review.
