Dear Rasikas,
I am a bharatanatyam dancer and want to do a a short piece on Goddess Saraswathi next week. I am looking for a suitable song. I found Mamavathu Sree Saraswathi by Priya sisters and Velai poovil irupal by nithyashree. But then both these songs are extremely slow. I would need something which is a bit faster or with more music so that I can choreagraph with more dance steps. Can anyone kindly let me know a good music piece on Goddess Saraswathi.
Thank You.

Velai tamarai poovil iruppal by Unnikrishnan is pretty fast-paced and has good orchestration.

'Kan thirandu parai' is on an old Kalavardhini dance CD. I'm not sure if it's easily available.

Hi Saawariya, I am not good enough to provide with the detailed meaning. But still here is a small jist.
P: The writer request Kalaivani who sits in the beautiful lotus flower to open her eyes and bless.
A: There is no one other than this Godess to give us the boon of ART and so we will sing in praise of her everyday.
C: We will be drowned in the mellifluous music and dance and thus giving us self satisfaction, and with this we pray at her feet to shwer the blessings on us.
Here is another request from me regarding the song on Goddess Saraswathi. I saw this video in you tube, "Mamavathu Sri Saraswathi" comes up with bright orchestra and suits classical Bharatanatyam v well. Here is the link for this video.
http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=s ... 0&start=20
Can anyone let me know who has sung this song and where can I get the audio?
Thank You.

Lji and saawariya are you going by any published works of the composer for these lyrics or, are you trying to transcribe it off some audio track? If the latter, then I think that the last 2 words of the anupallavi can't be nAraNa nAyaki - this is a padavarNam dedicated to tANDava mOhini, naTarAja manOhari, and should not have any reference to the devi as the consort of nAraNa/vishNu. So the phrase should either be nAraNa sOdari (vishnu sOdari) or kAraNa nAyaki.

I always thought it was basically a varnam in praise of Shakti, but I do remember reading in an arangetram program (ah yes, my oh so reliable sources) looong ago that this varnam was dedicated to Devi, and her three principle manifestations as Parvati, Lakshmi, and Saraswati. The first definitely dominates lyrics-wise, but I think "nAraNa nAyaki" may be intentional.

Here is what I hear. I have indicated where the corrections are in bold - I will try to translate it later. What Umesh says may be one way of interpretting it, but I think there may be another as well.

[1] tANDava mOhinI - would literally mean attractive performer of tANDava - but since the dEvi does not dance the tANDava, I think this interprettation of mine is the correct one
[2] If one were to interpret the anupallavi and muktAyisvara sAhityam as free flowing text, it can be interpretted as "Please assist (tuNai purivAyE) in the dissipation (aganriDa) of our miseries (tunbam), Oh pArvati (lalitAmbikayE), the granter (tandiDum) of bliss (inbam)! Praised (pugazhndiDum) by the mother (janani) who resides (vIZhttiDum) in (tannil) a beautiful (Sen) lotus (kamalam), the consort (nAyakI) of vishNu (nAraNan) who blesses (aruLum) us with abounding (pongum) wealth (dhanamum), and sarasvati (vANi), adorned (SUDiya) with a cresent-shaped ornament (pirai) on (adil) your head (Siram), on whose lap (maDiyinil) a vINa (vINai) encrusted with emeralds (marakata) shines lustrously (tulanga), and scholars (pulavargaL), you (nIyE) are pArvati (umai avaL), the mother (tAyE) who bestows (aLittiDum) the essence (poruLai) of grace (aruL)". If this were the case, the entire varNam is dedicated to pArvati - and will carry a single theme. The issue I have with Umesh's explanation - (and how I have translated it), is that it merely does lip service to the concept of a varNam with all three manifestations of Sakti described in it

shoiganga,
sorry I dont know who sang it :S
Ravi,
thanks for the wonderful meaning. Yes this is how I learnt the varnam. As I told you my tamil is not good but the dance does interpret this meaning.
However, what I believe is that, this varnam is dedicated to Devi, who is formed with the shaktis all the 10 mahavidyas...created by the light bestowed by Brahma Vishnu and SHiva when they had to kill the demon Mahishasura. Therefore Devi has the powers of Lakshmi, Saraswati and Parvati and hence depicted in this varnam as such. I read this form of Devi in Devi Mahatyam long back in a book dedicated to Devi.
anyone would like to further clarify?

I hope this is not too late.
I am not sure who the composer is,
But:
Nanmukan Nayaki Nadhaswarupini
Ragam: Saraswathi Thalam: Adhi
Really good keerthanam and it is perfect for dancing
I can't really give you the lyrics or meaning. Perhaps Mr. Shankar can, it is a thamizh composition.
