State-owned All India Radio (AIR) has recently launched a separate channel for Carnatic music on the DTH platform. The FM channel 'Ragam' now available exclusively on Prasar Bharati’s DTH platform, is being broadcast from Tiruchi. Asked whether this initiative is to take on the satellite radio channel Shruti from WorldSpace, Mr K. Srinivasa Ragavan, Station Director-Chennai, says, "This is aimed at meeting our audience’s demand for Carnatic music."

DTH - Direct To Home . It is a small home satellite dish and there are many providers like Tata, Sun etc. ( similar to DirectTV and DISH in the U.S. but the size of the dish looks smaller ). There are the umpteen video channels and some audio channels. AIR Ragam is on the audio only side. To the extent I listened to it a few months back during a visit, it was pretty good. Only odd thing is, you can only tune to a video channel or an audio channel at one time. Imagine the video-audio and interpersonal conflicts that can produce!! Secondly, if you do not make special routing of audio which most people do not, you have to have TV on ( with no video ) to listen to the audio channel!!
