dear rasikas,

i am a complete novice in carnatic music and have just started to educate myself a little bit. recently i was listening to akella mallikarjuna sarma garu on the violin and he was playing a krithi in nagaswaravali. to my untrained ear, it sounded very much like the ragam bahudari. from a quick search on google, i learnt that they are both janyas of harikambhodhi and are also so called "twin ragas". i dont know anything about the concept of "twin ragas". can anyone please help me to understand this?

best regards
shashi

I haven't heard about twin ragas but they are allied ragas. Yes, both are derived from Harikambhoji. Nagaswaravali has the scale SGMPDS SDPMGS while Bahudari takes SGMPDNS SNPMGS.

Yes, they are janyas of the harikAmbhOji mElam (28). They are closely allied. You can see that from the arOhaNa (swara ascent) and avarOhaNa (swara descent). Both don't have RSabham in them while nAgasvarAvaLi doesn't have niSAdam.

harikAmbhOji S R2 G3 M1 P D2 N2 S S N2 D2 P M1 G3 R2 S
bahudAri S G3 M1 P D2 N2 S S N2 P M1 G3 S
nAgasvarAvaLi S G3 M1 P D2 S S D2 P M1 G3 S
