All that gastronomic frenzy in the cafeterias , food stalls .
Sivagami Petachi Auditorium by night
Curtains rising up and welcoming audiences of Ten or less .
The pitiful conditions at Mylapore Fine arts - who said Customer is the King ? It is the Sabha Secretary .
Near stampede conditions for some select artists .
That sly ticket seller at the Krishna Gana Sabha window = who pushes the higher denomination first with a poker face.
Those elderly chaps who have nothing better to do - who read Kutcheribuz and Hindu openly right in front of the artist's eyes.

The rush of people who want to be present at Academy concerts of Nednuri and RK Srikantan -

One can find some other flavours too, like the people who come into the hall and sit right in front of you --- and then hold the newspaper up in front of them!

The same bad behaviour will be there as we see all year, but amplified.

Suddenly we have to start paying for concerts that we see for free for the other eleven months --- that ought to improve the behaviour, but it doesn't.

But somehow, there is an atmosphere, that is not there in Feb to Nov. A certain thrill in the air. I don't know how much that has to do with pickle rather than music! Or with the fact that it is the one month in the year when the temperatures actually favour rushing from place to place?

I can't tell how it will be for me --- until it happens. My wife started to keep a diary a few months ago, and I've clocked over forty concerts since then. It isn't as if I need December.

But maybe the magic is imported, by those who do not have the rest of the year here, and do not get totally familiar with the continually on-tap music. I used to say that there was only one thing that made Christmas fun, and that was to spend it in a house with young children. Could it be like that with the December season and visitors?

So far as the world's non-carnatic crowd is concerned, December is peak season for tourism --- and the vast majority of those tourists pass through the city completely oblivious to the music festival! It is so vast: how can this happen?

I'd like to get to some of those morning MA concerts, biological clock allowing. Otherwise, I expect I'll be popping into Raga Sudha hall from time to time (much as I do for the rest of the year). Hopefully I'll get to eat a dosai or two at NGS!

Coolkarni sir ... Just to add somemore,
1. Mylapore mamis discussing loudly in the middle of a thani avarthanam, as to what mite have been happening in the mega serial they are missing out at the cost of the concert.
2. The "encore" for the "Mischievous Kannan" and the "Snake dance songs".
3. Artists crow catching the "prominent" personalities to get themselves noticed...
4. And of course some of the mrudangam bashers who think, that the main artists are singing for their accompaniment.

young mridangam vidwans on bikes , dashing to another venue , carefully balancing their instrument ?

Today the weather has changed and what a lovely cool breeze we had in the morning . only guys who sweat it out for the rest of the year know the full value .
Music is in the air !!!!

BTW Sakunthala Narasimhan will be giving a Lecdem at Parthasarthy Sabha on Dec 17th.Folks willing to see a tiny tot singing alongside can plan to drop in that day . It has been a long time since prodigies were around and this kid is amazing .

I am trying for another session maybe on 17th afternoon / evening at mantras home . Let us see .

On a serious note , Madras Music Festival is of such proportions that your question cannot be answered .

If you are a newcomer , you will get an answer to the question as to why Chennai has been such an attraction .

So many performers , moving in and out of slots , performing more to the Gods above and less to the sparse audiences in front....
Young accompanists slugging it out in front of what is definitely a knowledgable audience and moving up a notch in their own self awareness .....
Seniors - packaging and repackaging their wares on a stylised framework that has the abhang-pullers at one end and exotic pallavi specialists at the other....
Sweet sellers who have no clue as to what is sweetness for the ears .....
Those couple of minutes staring at the Kalanidhis Names at Academy , while a door opens and soft strains of Music waft through ....
The Radel Cubicle which gets more and more interesting , every year .
David Lean could not have captured the essence of Chennai. Even with a thousand cameras.

So the bottomline is : ( atleast that is my bottomline )
Stuff your purse with rs 500 and land somewhere in the zone between Academy and Sastri Hall with The Days Hindu in hand . And go where your heart tells - a famous name one day , a friends concert on another , an absolutely unknown name the next and so on ........

Sir, nowadays ifrequency of instrumental concerts are not found frankly to say lacking especially veena how could it appear as in early days
what the instrumentalist should do to improve frequent solo concertlease suggest

As far as schedule of concerts, the websites kutcheris.com and kutcheribuzz.com do list them, but mostly of the major sabhas. If you want to listen to a variety of concerts including the early morning concerts at a cozy home in natural illumination in Luz or at a 400 year old temple in West Mambalam, here are my two options:

You can pick up the small pocket calendar by Kannan (Available at all Nalli stores I guess, after Dec.1) or they are online at www.chennaidecemberseason.com. These smaller but interesting series of kutcheris do not afford to get into The Hindu!

Could we even have a thread for house/chamber concerts? Sometimes, even when announced, we might not know from the organisation name, that it is a chamber concert.

Yet again, yesterday, I failed to realise it was the last weekend in the month, and failed to look at the paper until after 4.00pm. Another Musiri house concert missed .

I made up for it, though, with Suguna P & Suguna V

Thanks mankuthimma, i have been looking at the sites mentioned here, and wow, i have no idea how to choose, so much to see and hear but i m sure i will have a great time, first time coming to india, first time to chennai.
