Mahalakshmi in Tiruvarur

Post by satyabalu »

Re: Mutthuswamy Dikshithar (Krithis)
I read an invitation from Tiruvarur temple which states MD has sung on "Mahalakshmi"who is present (Vasam cheyyum in Tamil) there..I am curious to know what is the specific kriti .Where is the sannidhi of mahalakshmi in Tiruvarur?I am also told Mahalakshmi is doing tapas to regain mahavishnu(according to sthala purana referred by a devotee who had been residing there)who had his head regained/refixed(-excuse for the possible communication gap)

This was song was probably composed right after hiraNmayim lakSmim (lalitA). kamalAyam is indeed the kamalAmbA temple in tiruvArur. This is the tiruvArur tyAgarAja temple. This kamalAmbA is waiting to get married to tyAgarAjasvAmi. Legend goes like "The day the stone chariot moves, that day kamalAmbA will marry tyAgarAja". MuttusvAmi dIkSitar always calls kamalAmbA as mahAlakSmi, varalakSmi, hariyuvatim, sivAnujaya, etc!

*Residing in kamalalaya Skhetra.*Repository of pleasures&possessions(Inbam&Bhagyam).
*Create, guarding(Katthu) all the worlds(Andacharacharam)and then absorbs everying to herself -she is the one wearing clothes(Vastra)red&yellow coloured ,eliminates POVERTY&grief, seed of Maya, who is brightened(prakasikkum)/luminating as "jaya subha dayaki"ie Sri Mahalakshmi is taking care of me.(yennai kappatrugiral)-
Done to the extent possible for me to translate!

This is an incident in Dikshithar"s life that led to the creation of
the Danyaasi Krithi , Mangala Devathayaa
Tvyaa Bahumaanithoham ".

You can download it from :
http://www.sangeethapriya.org/tributes/ ... ithis.html ( Sl no., 184)
rendered by Smt Visalakshi nityanand.

The worship of Maha Lakshmi as Mangala Devatha
was initiated by Adi Sankara in the first slokam of
Kanaka Dhaaraa stotram.Perhaps, Dikshitar took then
his cue from Adi Sankara. In this Krithi, he
expressed his gratitude to MahaLakshmi for
having cured the infatuation that his
second wife had for Jewelery and Gold .
He had composed the night before a krithi in
Ragam Lalitha requesting for it.
There he declared that he
will not approach any body and beg for their
favour. Maha Lakshmi responded to that
firm resolve of Dikshithar and appeared in
the dream of his wife , who thereafter lost her desire for
worldly wealth. Hence the Lalitha Raga Krithi and the
Dhanyaasi Krithi are very closely connected to that
incident in Dikshitar's life."

The sahityam of this Lalithaa Raga Krithi :

Pallavi: HiraNmayeem Lakshmeem sadhaa bhajaami
Heena manavaasrayam tyajaami

Anupallavi: Chiratara sampath prathaam Ksheerambhudi Tanayam
Hari Vakshasthala Aalayaam Harineem charana Kisalayaam
Kara Kamala dhruta Kuvalayaam maragatha mani Valayaam

Charanam: Sveta Dwipa vaasinieem srikalaambhikaam
Bhootha bhavya vilaasineem bhusura pujithaam varaam
Mataram Abjamaalineem maanikya Aabharanadharaam
Gita Vadhya vinodhineem girijaam taam Indiraam
seetha kirana nibha vadanaam sritha chintaamani sadhanaam
Peetha vasanaam Guru Guha Maathula Kaanthaam LALITHAMM
(HiraNmayeem Lakshmeem Sadhaa Bhajaami )

*Thank you Venkata Kailasam for explaining the link between the two kritis. For the lalitha kriti I (May be biased) would have preferred DKJ version.with eduppu in sangeetha- vadya vinodini.
*Sri A.Sundaresan while teaching this used to tell " Dikshidhar inthapatil swaraksharam vari vazhangiyirukar"(MD has brought in a lot of swaraksharams in this kriti).True!

The wordings 'hIna mAnava ASrayaM tyajAmi' clearly indicates that MD depracates dependence on humans for wealth. This does not seem to do anything with MD's wife. It is at best an imagination.
According to http://www.carnatica.net/special/md-kshetra-iii.htm 'hiraNmayIM lakshmIM' was composed by MD at mannArguDi.
