In the Mid 80s , a duet featuring Bismillah Khan -N Rajam and Zakir Husian was on at IIT's Open Air Theatre.

They performed Brilliantly upto 11.45 pm and just before the maestro was to break into his concluding bhairavi , he noticed that the claps for the just concluded raga were not dying down.
He then went on to say
" I feel that our music has found your appreciation.I am in a mood to play more .Only If I can have a hot cup of tea ." (in Hindi of course)

Lo then , right in front of our eyes , someone went out to fetch him the brew and he got himself refreshed.
and at `11.56 sharp , they played the first notes of a Malkauns.
The atmosphere was dense and cold facilitating a fine accoustic effect ...
the IItians on the steps shifted their pillows and their lying-down positions
And I gave a small pat to my stomach (which was reminding me that the Bakery next to waldorf would be closing anytime)
and said hold on..this is going to be a great evening .Let us not miss it just for a Bread-Butter-Jam.
Twenty years later I am glad we stayed back..

Sad indeed. May God grant peace to his soul. I suppose the best way to remember him i to hear his music.

I went to bed seeing a confident Bismillah Khan on NDTV
With all those drip lines running through his nostrils, he still persevered with singing for two minutes .
And said
"With so many people enquiring about my health , it is heartening to know that I live in so many hearts. What else can be more reassuring to me.I pray Allah !!

Shocking news! I had just read this yesterday...

http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/holnus/00 ... 202010.htm

He had 'sung' his last two songs for his doctors.

Shehnai maestro Ustad Bismillah Khan died of cardiac arrest in the wee hours of Monday morning.

The 91-year-old Bharat Ratna awardee, who had been admitted to Heritage hospital on August 17 with age-related health problems, passed away at 2.20 am.

I heard him give a new dimension to banaras , on the TV today( a clip recorded sometime back)
apparently he did not want to be shifted to a Delhi hospital for treatment.
He preferred to stay back in the Benares he loved so dearly.

This clip -recorded a few months ago) showed him sport a toothy smile and say
Benares is Bana Ras --- No need to prepare the Ras for yourself. It is a city where the Ras is already prepared and ready for you .All you have to do is to take a sip.
Bana Hua ras - Bana Ras.. where else in the world will I get it.
Dilli aoonga tho ,India Gate Mein bajane ke liye aoonga.
(If I come to Delhi , it will be to perform at India gate)

Bismillah Khan played for Rajkumar in the kannaDa movie "sanAdi appaNNa", a movie about a sanAdi (ShahanAi) maestro. A very nice movie starring Rajkumar and Jayaprada. For playing in this movie, Bismilla Khan came down from Varanasi and stayed at the xhooting for 15 days, practising and delivering his bit. Here is a lovely song from this movie where he plays. The words and jati sequences in between are fabulous.

And here Raghavendra Rajkumar reminisces

I have attended two of his concerts, first one at Kalakshetra. The very first note he blown simply glued to shadjam and stayed there, that was a hair raising experience.
Second concert was at Thiruvananthapuram, years later, when he was awarded Swathi puraskAram. He was physically too weak and his son was the main player.

Fantastic...

A great ending towards the end of the song.

srikris,
Thank you for posting Sri. George's quintessential essay on Bismillah (Kalam's twin soul). I would go one step further and say (and hope) that there are others who have a spark of the spirit of these two exceptional men. We may not know them but we need them for today and for the future of humanity...

Thanks Srkris,
A great article - such depth lies in Banaras - I think I will need to shift to Banaras too for a brief period - perhaps that would click a few chords within me and help me in my contribution to music.

Folks: Please check out this website for fantastic audio and video clippings of HM maestros. There are two video clippings of Sri. Bismillah Khan one of which him playing in banaras. Extremely serene and poignant on the banks of the river. What is amazing is his effortlessness. Fingers hardly move.
