Dear rasikas,

My good old friend Chitti babu was well known for his "koel" song is what I gather from musicnirvana.com
Would someone amongst us have this piece and if so, upload it merely for my hearing pleasure.

Many thanks

May be "koel" is really "kuyil"..(purely my speculation). I vaguely remember hearing Chitti Babu's thukkada songs where he makes some interesting bird sounds using the Veena.

Suji,
You are right. It mostly sounded like mAND to me too. Yes, add that 'mishr' and the rest of the 'what is it?' is taken care of!
This perhaps was one of those tukkaDAs which catch on for some reason (novelty?). Give me Chittibabu's samudrapriyA any day...

I would say that one of his master pieces is the RTP in Karaharapriya, till date I have not heard a more impressive Thanam in that raga...
That cassette also has Bantureeti, which is out of the world... what a majestic treatment Chittibabu has given it... and Edudapadham in Khamas, another beauty...
how inspired he must have been on that day!

Chittibabu made me want to learn Veena. The veena never sounded more exotic, more captivating , until he popularized it.

Veena and Chittibabu are one, never separated from each other (IMO).

Chittibabu had a unique style. His thanams were quite amazing.in one music season in 1971 at indian fine arts society he played a scintilating RTP in Karaharapriya.I can never forget that thanam. it was a thrilling experience.

Bantureethi and kharaharapriya alapana were released by HMV with the title "milestones" way back in the eighties. This album not available in the market now and even the hamaraCD website does not show these items. In Sangeethapriya website, many recordings of Sri Chittibabu are available - please search there and you might find them.

One Chittibabu concert I really treasure is a 1960s (1968?) Jamshedpur concert on Sangeethamshare - the RTP in SaNmugapriya is brilliant (especially the tAnam - what creative genius!).

The kharaharapriyA RTP was available on the old musicindiaonline but it does not seem to be there on the new site.

Celebrating New Year 2011 with memories of Veena Chittibabu

Post by cpblog »

Along with the past memories from "Parvathi", Mysore, we wish all the Carnatic Music Rasikas from all over the World a Happy New Year - 2011 !!!

We wish to begin this English calendar year auspiciously with the strains of the Veena (supposedly the oldest mentioned instrument and a Divine one), and usher in memories of that great Vainika Chittibabu, as he played one night in the '60s, all alone in that house for a handful of the family. As further recollections to his great memory we also feature him with Palghat Raghu, Vellore Ramabhadran and KS Manjunath.

As always, may peace be with you all ("Sukhi Evaro")

The Chittibabu style appears to have all but disappeared on the modern stage. It is quite sad considering veena has also faded away in the modern world of Carnatic music.

I only know of one of his disciples being Smt Prabhavathi Ganesan, an excellent and very humble artist who has entirely imbibed the style of her guru. Unfortunately, she doesn't perform as much. Does anyone know of Chittibabu's other students?

I hope I can help here. Some of Chittibabu garu's other disciples are Shanthi Rao, Suma Sudindra and Sundar. I am surprised that Rajesh Vaidhya's name slipped by my fellow rasikas. And finally, there is Durga Krishnan who has established herself in the Boston area as a teacher and musician, and an active voice in the propagation of our music in the New England area (www.nescm.com). I believe she is also on the faculty of LearnQuest Academy
