8) Behag Varnam
9) Rabeendra Sangeet

Umabharanam included a nice alapana and some great swaras.

Pakkala nilabadi had some fast paced swaras with an akara eduppu which was very nicely done.

Varali & Bhairavi alaps covered 4, may be 5 octaves.

Some glimpses of vintage TMK before his reformist persona.

A range of three octaves is enough for Carnatic music. Beyond this limit it's a strain both for the singer as well as the listener.

Perhaps he is preparing himself to sing geetham and prabandham in the future.

Spoken like a conservative critic :) Those trying to push the boundaries may differ.

suresh,
You offered me a point.
Conservative critics may be necessary to define boundaries.
Pushing boundaries might end up as 'fetes' - not a must in fine arts.

What is going on with TMK, looks like there was no structure to the concert whatsoever...

All progress happens only after boundaries are pushed. It may not seem significant at that time, but these efforts gather critical mass over a period of time and then a new wave forms that moves the state-of-the-art forward. Fine arts is no exception.

Point
Truth always is in a in a minority of One and Every custom begins as a broken precedent.
Counterpoint
TRADITION means giving votes to that obscurest of classes, our ancestors. It is the democracy of the dead. Tradition refuses to surrender to the arrogant oligarchy of those who merely happen to be walking around

I noted down the lyrics except for one line of the anupallavi, Arasi. Here we go: copying this from my cellphone & sorry for not providing a transliteration in English.

Missed next line

ச:

pOtta vedha moLakkavilla (the seeds didn't sprout)

kAlamellAm idhu thAna (is this how it is going to be?)
veLLAma kAdu muzhukka vendhEthAn pogumA (will all the farm land go dead?)
EzhapAzha nAnga madiyEndhi manamurugi

mazha varuma (will i rain), maN maram tharumA (will the land become green again?)

What contour of bhairavi did TMK show in his 5 octave siging which he couldn't in the usual 2 octave !
I remember when Bilahari Marthandam Pillai says he was awarded the title for singing that raga for hours hus son hums and replis that it can ve sung in few seconds also.showmanship everywhere since there are psychopants.

What contours are there in the Himalayas that is not in Parangimalai? Only people willing to venture out of their narrow confines will know.

Thanks Sridhar, Sureshvv for the lines and sankark for your effective translation. Good verses in the Good Earth mode. TMK would have created the mood very ably. But personally, I wish the caraNam had ended with a note of hope of some kind--instead of leaving the poor cultivators of the vAnam pArtha bhUmi and the listeners with no hope. After all in music, even oppAri-s (dirges), there is the positive element of singing about the virtues of the dear departed.

The good thing is, that TMK learned all the words to sing this eminent writer's poem and worked on presenting it musically--well, glancing at the lyrics, of course!

No hope of that from Perumal Murugan! Mainly the reason his poetry has been handpicked for presentation. Of course, giving the DK cadres much hope :D

Sureshvv,
Just thought for a moment. Supposing Perumal Murugan wrote verses meant as songs for TMK (as with the designer of TMK's kurtAs)...and he chose to, as most composers did, added his mudrA to them too, that would be something! Also an ariyum aranum, avan maganum onRE (Hari, Hara, and his son are one) aspect thrown in there :)

Except he referred to it as a "keerthanai" :(

Wonder if it is just a temporary brain glitch or a conscious attempt to muddy the waters or an eye poke at people who care about such things?
