Re: Abhishek Raghuram@Hamsadhwani(Adayar) On Sept 07th,2025
It is a long gap of 3 months , felt not much urge to hear because when i wanted to hear there is some kind of slots on a weekend where they invite 4 artist giving each 30 mins in the pseudo carnatic concert . To see on a sunday abhishek singing in hamsadhwani with an early single nirvana evening slot is surely a joy to a fading concert experience (hopefully it will not completely fade)from the so called mecca of actual carnatic concert where time is given to artists.
There was a 20 mins delay , i wish they started on time (I had to wade from metro big to hear my third mrudangam like tani avartanam) . Thank God the secy Hamsadhwani sundar openly said you can sing more if you want post main part. The day was also grahanam so possibly for sure ABhishek picked up lot of krithis tying sun and moon . I wish Abhishek took a RTP instead of two thukkadas when sundar said you can sing and take your time.
Abhishek Raghuram USP is his deep baritoned and also micro tenors in his voice .His voiec obeys so many crazy ideas , at times he is strategizing and delivering brilliant ideas with no ambiguity , just like assuming say a TNR singing vocal instead of nagaswaram. That is a huge plus . But there is also a stage craft that he opts out a bit of distorting the orderliness of a concert , not like say TMK who completely sabotages by singing a pallavi from one raga and then krithi another raga, it is more not knowing is that a neraval or a slokham when he starts a krithi . He is stagecrafting so that after few lines when he say goes back to original line we all recognize what he sings and with that there is a brahmippu effect . When I say orderliness it means it gives more depth and is not to be confused with losing the creativity <<HEar MMI ,SSI, GNB and their next gen say TRS etal...>>.
The start was lovely with saveri varnam standard one it gives a ready made zing. WHen he sang KAnadA my mind was racing once me hearing him in a pallavi darbar where he landed with shurutti note feel , but this KAnadA was lovely, sri narada came out weell
WE dont get often to hear sowrashtram that too an alapana it was lovely but did he sing the line itelf it was bit a confusion that stayed in between a slokham or a line of a krithi and then he sang the famous sooryamurthE.Narayanagowlai was brilliant , i am usually a tube light where i go thru a phase it is kedaragowlai and may be a narayanagowlai, but he sang a straight representation of sri ramam , could see the glimpse of illustrious paramaguru Semmangudi there
Chandrajyothi was fantastic to me in its entirety with the orderliness , neat alapana with his voice guiding the moon that is up above hamsadhwani .It was full moon for me and the krithi was fantastic .
Shankarabharanam he generally sings a lot , i see him generally avoiding kambodhi . I dont know why , i am yet to hear him sing Kambodhi as main in a direct live concent. But hey he is indeed a brilliant shankarabharanam singer . ALapana was superb , when he started the krithi again it apppeared too stretched bit of over neravalified touch - i wish he sticks to his paramaguru SSI sing neatly the krithi and then take neraval without any muddying the krithi and subsequent neraval impact . I adore this dakshinamoorthE krithi and abhishek did justice.
In the tukkadas i liked the last kamas a lot (teruvil)... Did he really sing vanamali jeeyar jonpuri before. With my smudged handwriting where i have put dasharatha sudha sutha i googled to extrapolate this krithi . I did not get duing the concert the ragam jonpuri but that rendition was lovely
HN Bhaskar played very well, at times when you play with Abhishek he does not give too much of violin alapana return . HE has and surely had on this day the MSG tonal quality. THe Double mrudangam of both Tiruvarur Bhakthavatsalam students was great . At times double mrudangam can tear your ear drums they were aggressive but they carefully watched out for over sound. There is surely a sustained lovely impact during krithi and swaras when double mrudangam ensures more tonal adhesiveness from the prime jeeva instrument - murudu angam . Tani was fireworks .. i bit zoned out .
Special shout out for Hamsadhwani Sundar
---------------------------------------
Sundar and possibly extended team are really doing very well for CM scene. Sundar respects artists gives crisp introduction . HE genuinely appreciates and finds special joy for eg in this concert since he is featuring two mrudangam artists, he takes lavish time to encourage and pep the artists without sounding too brash with a prid . All said we have lost lot of great sabhas (like say Safe Ramabadran + Nadopasana srinivasan), for sure Hamsadhwani Sundar is doing as good or may be even better than his late father Hamsadhwani Ramachandran .Atleast when you consider many sabhas with halls like say SKGS they dont even conduct a concert . Hamsadhwani sabha is bringing the same carnatic sabha charisma that is prevelant from 1988 to 2020 plus years till covid killed a lot or more importanly online uploading and free streaming is killing audience turnover. One has to also appreciate hamsadhwani sabha also features lot of drama and keeps showcasing chennai as the cultural capital
Conclusively
------------
All said I found great joy with Abhishek Raghuram-Bhaskasr-Sairam- Sumesh concert , each of them were encouraging and presenting with depth (ofcourse orderliness and its associated krithi fragmentation bit goes for a toss that is just for only brief moments). Particularly ABhishek voice which completely follows his own brilliant musical insight without dissipation loss is a joy to celebrate deepest of best music - which is only Carnatic Music
Overall and excellent concert for 2 hours and 50 Mins
