Interesting ragam indeed, belongs to 20th mela. Today I attended a violin duo recital by Lalitha/Nandini and they gave a nice rendition of Dikshitar's krithi Nilotpalambam.

This ragam takes shuddha dhaivatam in some sancharas, in addition the regular chatusruti dha for rItigowla. I am interested in finding out what these phrases are (where the shuddha version appears).

This ragam has a rather unusual feel to it. In case anyone here can share a recording of this ragam, it would be quite instructive for us. I will try to get a recording from the above concert if I can.

Also, what are the other compositions in this ragam?

This rAga has no place for D2 at all. It is the 20th asampUrNa mELa and hence has no place for bhAShAnga swaras. On the contrary, rItigauLa does allow for the sparing use of D1. But most musicians eschew it completely without compromising on rAga bhAva (We have got used to it I guess)

I think I know what jayaram is saying! I too remember listening to one version of nIlOtpalAmbAm, which was a mish mash of D1 and D2, and looked neither here nor there :-( too!

Bothe rAgas are very different. nArI rItigauLa has ben discussed at various places at various times in this forum. Let the threads remain separate.

nArirItigoula has no place for D2. It uses the D1 only and Dikshitar's kriti stands out as a model. I have heard Smt. Nitashree render the kriti using D1 completely.

Dikshitar has composed two in this beautiful rAgam.

nIlOtpalAmbAM bhajarE rE citta - mishra cApu
shrI nIlOtpala nAyikE - rUpakaM

Nithya has taken a liking to the former while TMK sings the latter.
