Thillana in Abheri, shloka lyrics and translation
Hi!
I was wondering if maybe someone would be able to help me out with lyrics to a very nice Thillana in Abheri raga, Adi tala. On the CD cover the author is marked as Gopala Krishna Adiga. My googling and forum searches were unfortunately not successful, which is why I'm grateful to anyone able to help me with this one. I can also send the music via e-mail if needed.
I would like to know the language of the shloka part and also the translation.
This forum is always such a wonderful source of information, hoping for the best this time, too!
Thanks in advance!
RM

Dear Lakshman, I tried to send you the file via e-mail but it came back - apparently I had the address of an old hotmail account no longer in use.. I will upload the file to Dropbox and will send you a link to it in a PM.

If the audio clip is from the CD album smara sada manasa, the tillAna is by Svati Tirunal. The lyrics and meaning are here:

Re: Thillana in Abheri, shloka lyrics and translation
ruthmaria,
Would it be possible to take a picture of the CD cover and upload it here (or provide a link to look up details of the CD)?
If you need help how to upload pictures, let us know. We can guide you how to do that.
I doubt the tillAna is a composition of Gopala Krishna Adiga (an eminent kannaDa poet of the 20th century. It is possible someone took one of his songs and created a tillAna out of it)
Thanks!

This is the CD cover - I didn't take the picture myself and can't get a better version, sorry for that. The English text on it doesn't make things any clearer, I fear.
Lakshman, I don't think that it is the tillana you suggested, the lyrics don't seem to match..

ruthmaria or Lakshman-ji,
Please send me the audio clip. If the audio is clear, one of us on the forum should be able to help with the lyrics and meaning.
Also, any chance you can upload the front cover of the audio CD?
Thanks.

Ruthmaria,
From the CD list photo, these are clear:
The artiste is Manasi Prasad, who sings (and dances?). She has collected Kannada poems from famous writers, and set them to tune and sung them. It appears she/someone would have danced to them finally, after making the CD.
You could reach out to her on Facebook.

Dear Lakshman, I sent you the link to the audio clip two days ago, it appears you haven't received it? I wonder if there is a problem with forum's PM system.. I will simply put the link here, so others can also check it out: https://www.dropbox.com/s/0859h3zicn79d ... a.mp3?dl=0
I don't have the front cover of the CD unfortunately, someone took the photo in a shop in India to let us know which songs are available. It's a series of CDs with dance compositions, there are a whole of 14 volumes, if I'm not mistaken. They all have different artists performing the items. But thanks for the Facebook hint, Rsachi, if here nobody can help me even after listening to the audio file, I might try contacting Manasi Prasad directly.

Thanks ruthmaria. The caraNa passage is indeed in kannaDa. Maybe Rsachi can figure out the words and post them here.

Re: Thillana in Abheri, shloka lyrics and translation
What I could make out is that the words have been taken from some lines of a poem by Gopalakrishna Adiga, a Kannada poet. The words as I hear them go like this:
nammedeya kanasugale kamadhenu
adavo karidavo vanchitavanu
karivakaigihutido kanasugala harake gurutappagomukhada bayake bembalake
kattuvevu navu hosa nadondanno
rasada beedondanno rasada beedondanno
Perhaps (in the sense of "may it come about such that") our dreams may themselves become
The mythical wish-fulfilling cow
That will yield the milk/nectar of fulfilling our dreams,
That hand that milks the mythical cow becomes the hand of benediction
Like the cow-head spout that doesn't miss its mark as it pours out the benediction
May be we will build a new land of promise
A plentiful land of aesthetic joy
A plentiful land of aesthetic joy
nammedeya kanasugale kamadhenu
adavo karidavo vanchitavanu
karivakaigihutido kanasugala harake gurutappagomukhada bayake bembalake
kattuvevu navu hosa nadondanno
rasada beedondanno rasada beedondanno

Beautiful indeed! Beautiful song, too.
I am envisioning the choreography, and it is perhaps not so beautiful.

Thanks, Savitri-ji
Yes, Kannada poetry is like the wishfulfilling tree... So many great poets, so many streams of thought and influences.
This complete poem is brimming with revolutionary youthful zest, perhaps influenced by Swami Vivekananda

This is amazing! Thank you so much, Rsachi! And all the others, too, for the effort. I am most grateful!
I actually have the same problem with another tillana, but I will make that into a separate post for future references.
Thanks again!
