This was my first time attending the concert of this duo. I like each of these artistes individually and have both frequented and reviewed their concerts here before. And I was a bit unsure of how their different styles and strengths can go together. I am not very fond of Shashikiran/Carnatica type "combos" and I was a bit apprehensive before the start of the concert. As it turned out the combination worked out very well and made room for the strengths of both the artistes.

The concert was part of a thematic series on Tamil Isai. Was a good reason to cross Mount Road - something that my friends tease me for not doing enough of.

The pick of the concert was the innovative RTP set to khanda triputa tala panchamukhi nadai (beats only in khanda nadai) in varamu raga. The pallavi itself went "Thunai purindarul madhava, kesava mukunda". It was executed very well and formed a substantial part of the concert. Such complex pallavis are heard only during the season and only by senior artistes at the academy. Kudos for including this piece.

The naatai piece was also relatively new to me and coupled with the brisk swaras set the pace for the concert very well. The tiruppugazh was composed using nottu swaras. Have not heard this before either.

Good to see Suresh write a review in ordinary English instead of SMS or teaser pani!

A bit about the accompanists: Karaikkal Venkatasubramanian played most enthusiatically & shined in all the opportunities given to him including the complex pallavi. M.S.venkatasubramaniam made himself noticed with the excellent nadam & the nice thani partering with Prasanna.

Would the distinction between Kaanavendum Latcham Kangal and Kaana Vendum Latcham Kangal be pertinent in this case?

Is there one? I meant to use them interchangeably.

I don’t know. To me it sounds like “vendum” applies to “kaana” - but it should apply to Latcham Kangal. But I don’t know tamil rules very well. So I can only wonder. I mean if you separate it, it might sound closer to Kaana Latcham Kangal Vendum.

Sorry, I missed saying thank you for the nice review. 🙂

Is panchamukhi Nadai différent from khanda nadai?

Only the sashabda kriyas (beats) are in khanda nadai. The nishabda kriyas (wave and count) are in chatusra nadai. Attributed to M. Balamuralikrishna and his RTP the year he got the Kalanidhi.

Interesting bit was that they explained the tala only after the RTP was over. And then one entitled audience member pipes up, "En idha munnadiye sollala"? :D :D

Thought BMK did navamukhi and MLV responded in same season with pancamukhi! Remmeber reading that somewhere. We have discussed navamukhi in Tala / Laya section and a recording is also available in sangeethapriya.
