It was a stimulating evening at Gayana Samaja last week with melodies of Venkata Kavi being sung and rich tributes being paid to the poet-composer by well-known artistes of Carnatic mainstream.
In the galaxy of all time great vaggeyakaras of Carnatic music, the glow of Oottukkadu Venkata Kavi stands significant but his contributions weren’t available in the music arena for almost 200 years. Venkatakavi lived between the period of Purandara Dasa and Annamacharya and the Trinity, and is roughly placed between 1700-1765.
A sublime ghosti ganam lead by vocalist Neela Ramgopal flagged off the ‘Oottukkadu memoir show’ which brought out the classic Saptaratna Kritis of the poet. The seven gems have pallavi, anupallavi and a set of madhyamakala charanas, which can be rendered as swaras and lyrics. The kritis in ragas as Natta, Gowla, Kalyani, Keeravani, Todi, Paras and Madhyamavathi are said to be similar in style to Tyagaraja’s Pancharatnas in musical structure.
A talk on the Saptaratna Kritis by Sukanya Prabhakar had her diligently explain the nuances embedded in each of his pieces. “Oottukkadu Kavi had an Ekalavya saadhane in music. Just as there is no stopping him from his sahitya and swara flow, his descriptions of his guru and ishta devata Lord Krishna also flow concurrently with zest, passion and gusto,â€
