Nivedita,
Today's program was excellent. Dr.Vijayalakshmi Subramanyam's efforts in documenting more than 100 composers and their kritis is praise worthy. She mentioned that outside India too, Rasikas of foreign origin know and understand Melakarta ragas. Congratulations Nivedita !

Just noticed that the info is out on another thread already, but here I go anyway...

This Saturday's Nam Virundinar programme features...Arasi-ji! :) I met her for the first time on the sets of the show, and it was an experience I will never forget. Will write more about it once the show is telecast.

Meanwhile, tune in to Doordarshan's Podhigai TV at 7.30 am on Saturday, the 4th of February.

Nivedita,
Your interviews are very interesting for us, who live overseas. We listen to the artists on the computer, but don't see them in person. Your program brings them before us, with a face and mind. Waiting anxiously for your interview with Arasi. Keep up the good work. You do a very good job, and being so young. May God Bless you !

I was sad that I had missed the telecast in the morning, but I was so happy to see the repeat telecast at 7.30 in the evening. Arasi madam, very happy to know about you. Simple, unassuming and sweet inspite of achieving so much in the carnatic music field. All the best for all your future endeavors.

Interview with Smt.Arasi was quite interesting. I will try to buy the CDs by Sumitra Nitin and Neela mami, both bangloreans. Incidentally the explanation that the words Raji and Arasi mean the same was a bit puzzling. Raja is arasan. Rani is Arasi. But Raji is not the feminine of Raja ;)

Just listened to Nivedita's interview with Arasi on Venkatakailasam's site. Very beautiful. It was simple but eloquent. No veering off topics, griping about others but nice, easy going chat between the interviewer and the artist. Nivedita did a nice job, asking the questions pertinent to this show. Arasi's simple, straightforward answers were from the heart and endearing. Nivedita, like Abou Ben Adam, May your tribe increase! Looking forward to bright youngsters like you.

Thanjavooran, Priyaram, Punarvasu, aaaaabbbbb and Maduraimini,

Thank you all for your kind words. I had not looked at this thread for a few days, but have been reading the thread in the Vaggeyakaras Section.

Maduraimini,
Hope you caught my mentioning you somewhere ;)

kssr,
Well, a stretch, I know, but raja=royal, arasan is rAjA, so arasi is Rajee?--that's what my cousin meant, and I agreed with her, I suppose ;)

There was also a question about rhyming first and second letter in Smt.Arasi's compositions - (something like dwa..akshara, etc.,). A tamil interviewer /interviewee, discussing tamil poetry ,one would guess, would be more familiar with Eduhai and Monai than the dwa..

kssr,
Many words which are used in CM are sanskrit-oriented, aren't they? Nivedita was asking me about the songs (krutis) at that point. We still use expressions like svarAksharam, gamakam, pallavi, charaNam, and so many other sanskrit words. Was it dvi Sabda something ? ;)
Sanskrit scholars on board to the rescue...

The question was on dwitIyAkshara prAsam but Arasi's kritis being mostly in Tamil, edugai would have been apt.

In a strictly lighter vein, just like how using french words in English bestows a certain cachet ( oops! ), Sanskrit words like 'dwitIyAkshara prAsa' have that effect in high art like CM. I learned that word in the past few years in this forum and I tried it in a few select circles with very desirable effect ;) So, kssr, don't resist or mock, just join!!.
Nivedita sets up the context clearly that her question is about rhyme. I think that is the level most people relate to poetry and compositions. Most Tamilians only know that edukai and mOnai have something to do with rhyme, they do not know the details. I bet it is not their forte (oops!) ;)

Today's Nam virundhinar was with an Chitra vina artiste by Anuradha. As I switched on little late could not identify the Artiste and Podhigai also did not display at the end. An handy newly developed instrument with more features was the high light. His association with Kunnakudi and Harris Jayaraj was well recalled by him. It gives a different sound reminding Sitar. An excellent progrm co ordinated by Anuradha after a long time.

Her humility is a model for all other NRI VIPs to follow. You should do more such interviews of NRIs for them to be known in the Motherland.

Today's Nam virudhinar was Shriman Venkataraman Avl, Thambura player, an octogenerian. He shared his experience over 70 yrs as thambura player and his association with all yesteryear vidwans. Vidhya interacted with him and he answered all her querries. In my view few stereo type questions viz
his Guru ,disciples and debut performance were all irrelevent and could have been avoided. Totally the programme was good.

Today's virundhinar was Prof Shri R V Krishnan Avl. S Vijayalakshmi was the interviewer. He was the Vice Principal , Tamilnadu Music college. He is a great musicologist and published number of books on CM. His method of initiation of boys into CM was well explained. Each boy will be named by a swaram and will be made to stand in a circle. When Sankarabaranam is announced the respective boys will come forward and sing the swaram completing the full form of the raga. This method is a unique way of teaching. He must be more than 75 yrs. In total the progrm was good.

Today's virundhinar was Lakshmi Rajagopalan a Mumbai based C Musician disciple of Smt Balamani. A bank employee who opted for VRS was interviewed by M Vidhya. She sang Ennathavam saidhanai at the end. The questions were apt and she replied nicely. She has been conferred with lot of titles by different Mutt heads including Kancheepuram.

Today's nam virundhinar was by Kasim babu under the heading of Katrinile varum geetham. He spoke about the Shenoy Vidwan Shri Bismilla khan and his concert was telecast. He mentioned that his grand father Sheik Chinna moulana Saheb played at the 25th Anniversary of the Doora darshan at new Delhi along with Bismilla khan. There was never a jugal bandi but nadaswaram and shenoy were played in succession. In total the programme was quite interesting.
