'Nam Virundinar'--Chat show with Carnatic musicians

Post by nivedita »

Starting tomorrow (2nd July), Doordarshan Podhigai's daily morning chat show 'Nam Virundinar' will feature Carnatic musicians on Saturdays. It is a half-hour show, and begins at 7.30 am.

The first episode will feature the Carnatica Brothers K.N. Shashikiran and P. Ganesh. The chat with the Brothers will be telecast as two episodes, tomorrow and next Saturday.

The series will be hosted by yours truly. If you have any suggestions, please let me know. I will do my best to incorporate them. :)

Nivedita, All the best with this show! It sounds like a great concept.
Is it possible to have the videos available online, either through youtube or the show's website?

Nivedita,
Welcome back!
Good to know you are hosting another show. CM is getting more exposure in the media and from what we saw of your earlier show, Podhigai has chosen an able young presenter who does not play the interviewer to the hilt but elicits good responses from her guests.
What better than to start with your guru (s?)--such good communicators themselves?
I add to Mahavishnu's request--please let us have snippets from the show.
Happy that you will be working to bring CM more into focus for the TV viewer.
Good luck!

mahavishnu and arasi-ji, I will try to get a recording from DD and put it up on YouTube.

arasi-ji, Thank you! Yes, I wanted to have my guru Shri K.N. Shashikiran on the first episode of the show, and I'm very happy it happened, considering how busy he is! :)

Nivedita,

U could have posted this information bit earlier.Any way I saw this from 7.40 a.m onwards.Ganesh talked less.Sasikiran came out lucidly about his gurus and experiences.Their singing in between the chat is nice.

I look forward to next Saturday.Pl.inform about any repeat telecast of this programme.Because I am likely to be sitting in a vedantic lecture that time next week.

ganeshkant, sorry for the late posting about the show, didn't get the time earlier--the consequence of juggling too many things.

Will try to upload the video of the first episode in a couple of days.

Nivedita : Nice to note that new direction to Interview of elders (singers) complementing to your interview of youth talents in puduppunal. Good and keep it up.

Everywhere normally (lord) Ganesh Comes first and since he (Chitraveena Ganesh) is with him (Shashi) always Guru comes first (as you normally believe) so as your first interview with your guru.

Please see the link-

http://youtu.be/8g97cNivwhc

you were at the back for the same song Mr.Shashi & Ganesh sang that day and now you are at face to face interviewing both - Change within 1 and half years

Keep up the good work & God bless you.

Nivedita,
Excellent. You made him sing two songs too. Dr. Sundar's devotion to his profession and music was well narrated by him. His regards towards Vaggeyakara Thanjavoor Sankara Iyer was well expressed . 30 mts are not sufficient. Good luck to you.

It is a great idea not to limit the guests only to performing artists but include members of the greater ecosystem such as music writers. The session with Ms. Lakshmi Devnath was very informative and pleasing. Hope future editions of this program will present music critics, sabha secretaries, instrument manufacturers / maintenance artists, recording professionals, sound engineering professionals, sponsors and so on.

I too missed the episode featuring Dr Sunder and am keen to watch it.

Thank you, all!

makham--Yes, I've already recorded an episode with a very popular organizer and hope to interview critics, instrument makers, etc. in the future.

I'm likely to get the videos of a couple of episodes sometime next week. Will upload once I get them.

Doordarshan does not give me the videos, so I depend on someone else to record the episodes. This source, however, is not very reliable. So I'll only be able to upload videos once in a while. :(

Thanks. There is no hurry. You can upload whenever convenient.

Incidentally, to the list of stakeholders who make up the ecosystem, I forgot to mention rasikas. It will not be a bad idea to feature a rasika to know his/her expectations !

An ideal candidate for this programme is V.Sriram. I heard him speak recently in Bangalore. He is a store house of C Music knowledge; speaks well as well. If you necessarily want him to sing, I guess he will give it a shot, too!

Nivedita,
Excellent! Good luck to you. Your questions were all very apt. Srimushnam's explanations to the two schools and the kuchi, kappi difference were all quite interesting. His soft punch to the musicians in showing interest to know about the type of mirudhangam was very nice. His view for accompanying concert straight appears to be true. This was once mentioned by Thiruvaiyaru Annasamy Bhagavathar when PMI accompanied him at the Aradhanai some half a century back. If the mirudhanga vidwan is not alert at the eduppu then whole thing is out. Very good adivice by Srimushnam. His own thillana was excellent.
Who is our next virundhinar?

Nivedita,
A very good programme. This time though your questions were less Dr. Narmadha covered her entire journey. Her proficiency in CM, HM and Western is tremendous and 30 mts are not enough for such progms. Expected She would refer her Grand father's visit to Kabul as a first C Musician. In total an excellent virundhinar.

Thanjavooran,

Thank you very much! It was a delight interviewing Dr Narmadha. In spite of the fact that it was only a half-hour shoot, she put a lot of effort into the program, both pre- and post-shoot!

Balaji sir,

As I've said in my mail to you, I will try to get a copy of the recording at the earliest and upload it for you. :)

advaitin,

I don't think anyone has uploaded it, and I don't think a re-broadcast has been scheduled for now. I missed it myself, as I was travelling. Will try to get a recording and upload. :)

Nivedita ,
Excellent! Dr. SAK Durga's explanation as regards to Functional Nishadam and Organic Nishadam was educative. Folk songs do not have stringent rules is a point for detailed discussion. What our Pushpavanam Kuppusamy is going to say on this? Voice culture is a very good subject. Let us wait for a week more to listen further on this.

Again Dr.SAK Durga's vol II today was excellent. Her explanation regarding voice culture was good. Taking cold items will never affect the voice. ARI preferred cold water only. This time the interview telecast was for 2 days. Very educative.

Today's virundhinar was Laksmi Mohan, a music teacher. Subject: Autism in children. The subject was quite touching. Music therapy is the best solution for this type of syndrome. As usual 30 mts was not sufficient. Today's program was excellent.

I saw last week episode of yours when you interviewed Akshay padmanabhan. As i said long time back when you interviewed SM Vilasini , you have the right choice of words and most importantly you give that space for your guest of honour to speak clearly without interruption . Also liked akshay's candid talk(he wants to be a rasika first and then a musician  ) Akshay sang kadambari in mohanam and ramA nee semanavaru in kharaharapriya, did he sing anything before mohanam as I tuned half way thru

congrats ! Today's progm was excellent. Mirudanga vidwan J.V patiently answered all your querries. He is a pucca vocalist too which he proved at the end. His views regarding disappearing of audience during thani was quite interesting. His remarks about the Sabha secretaries too was well noted. Kartik fines arts was the first to honour a purcussion artiste and his regards to the good soul was very touching. His affection towards KVN was quite evident when he mentioned about his niravel singing.
