It was a truly outstanding lec dem by a great man! Was organized by Carnatica. Shall try compiling my notes and come up with a post soon. Neither violin accompaniment nor Mrudangam, yet the way he sang and his ideas were just unbelievable. On-the-spot innovation in Laya was the topic and Shri JV was just brilliant. Absolutely impromptu Pallavi design with notation being done on stage and what not! Such performances undoubtedly make one's season.

The topic was 'On the spot creativity in Pallavi and Kalpana Swarams'. Shall put together my notes and post. Might take some time as I am a bit hard pressed for time these days but shall definitely post.

well, i attended both the friday morning and saturday morning programmes of JV mama, though only in parts.

and i did not make any notes or recording on both occasions :(

at parthasarathy sabha, it was a pallavi in jayamanohari and kumudakriya set to misra triputa misra nadai.

at carnatica, it was in todi, set to kanda triputa kanda nadai.

J. Venkataraman's lec dem was more laya oriented and the pallavi was in misra tiruputa talam in misra nadai. Mainly this dem was only for senior students [ as per his statement too] since big kanakku occupied the entire dem. The prominent stalwarts present were Chengleput Renganathan and Madurai T. Srinivasan . The pallavi was Ongi ulagalandha from thiruppavai. Finally he praised the purcussion and violin artistes for their active participation/ support in this lec dem.

One question that we discuss here often that J. Venkataraman can answer is this.

This pallavi, mistra triputa, misra nadai: 7 times 7 + 2 times 7 + 2 times 7 .

In RTPs, is this pretty much treated as 49 units of pUrvangA and 28 units of uttaranga with arudhi as the demarcation point?
Or the division of the 49 units of pUrvangA into 7 beats of 7 sub-beats musically meaningful?
