I heard that Hyderabad brothers gave a delightful concert with Sri Karaikudi Mani on Mridangam. I think it was under Auspices of Karthik Fine arts.

A friend of mine informed me that it was the Hyderabad brothers of the last decade. They were at their best and the harikambodhi they sang was as good as it can get.

Any reviews please?

I was fortunate to be at the concert and it was indeed a delightful concert with spell bound audience. Tani was great and the energy among the artists was great. AparadamuLanniyu in Latangi was equally good and Tamil Padam in Saveri was wonderful.

I've been hearing the brothers consistently for the last 3-4 years and frankly cannot understand the ballyhoo about their music on this forum. It is quite true that the younger brother dominates (although only in alaapanas) but if rasikas stay away because that outrages the socialists in them, it is entirely their loss....I can think of barely half a dozen names in the "prime slots" today who come anywhere close to their level of vidwat.

Anyway, it was indeed an excellent concert with a daring Harikambhoji that's the pick of what I've heard in the season so far. Here is the list:

Hyderabad brothers have a great voice, and I like their music, but I find them singing the same pieces. Can more knowledgeable people comment on their repertoire of kritis? I have heard of them presenting Dinamani oh so many times already!!

ballyhoo means blatant advertising or publicity... Are u referring to ballyhoo or an absence?! In the light of ur subsequent stmt, I can't make any sense :O

And I agree with shyam223... They've sung harikAmbhOji God alone knows how many times. It's either dinamaNivamsha or enduku nirdaya whenever I've attended their concerts...

I agree with Jigyaasa and shyam223. They have sung Harikambodhi a lot of times. I was interested purely because I heard that this concert was very well sung.

I have been listening to them since 1993. My only grievance with Hyd Bros is that they don't seem to sing any repertoire that they haven't sung in recordings. (May be because they have released a lot of cassettes). Every Kriti that they sing, seem to be already sung and released by themselves. For examples, out of this list itself, other than Nannu Vidachi, I myself have all the other kritis as their commercial cassettes.

Thier repertoire is much much more Im sure. I still remember how spell bound I was listening to a Hiranmayim Lakshmim by them in 1997 or a Srikrishnam Bhajamanasa that they sang in 1998. Oh those days!!! ...Hyd Bros with Palghat Raghu in Music Academy... I loved those seasons..

Yours is one of the interpretations, Jigyaasa. Ballyhoo/Hullabaloo can also mean a lot of noise over nothing... I meant the bashing the brothers regularly receive on this forum which I feel is somewhat undeserved although I agree with some points. I hope it makes sense now.

As someone who values Manodharma over composed music, I do not generally hold lack of a very wide repertiore against an artiste. I've said this for TVS also. Nor am I a great fan of packing every cutcheri with "rare" krithis which are all too often devoid of any musical merit. True test of vidwat for me is how a raga is interpreted, how swaras are sung, how a neraval is done etc...think about it - in a main piece, the krithi itself takes only 10% of the time...

They may have rendered Dinamani a million times for all I care...but the way Harikambhoji was handled was extraordinary and that made the day for me...

I've heard them only once (in Singapore- Dinamani Vamsa main) and was impressed. Hoping to catch them this week before leaving, even with the "socialist" in me (and why not? The elder brother sings really well and with lots of bhavam too)!

I was fortunate to be at their concert on Dec. 23rd where they sang Endduku Peddala Vale - Shankarabaranam and enjoyed their concert. I came all the way from US for Chennai season like many others. It was disturbing to see a very biased review about their concert in well known news paper for two things, the tone of the review shows a prejudistic review, a very personal opinion imposing on the readers and secondly if the journalist true intention is to get the message across wide audience, can certainly work on simplifying the language. The article indicated journalist's neediness to show his vidwath and command on the language. Bottom line, the journalist didn't do justice to hisher profession. My request is have an open mind which helps the artists and the audience.
