Accompanied Smt bAmA krishnan - vocal support avaneeshwaram vinu - violin and maNoj shivA - mrudangam

RamanAthan of carnatica gave a brief introduction and said it was a thematic concert to Lord shivA.Being my first concert of ponnammal , I did have a mind set having a mental model of this golden girl.It came out perfectly with the gentle ascent of nAttaikurinji with a very rare varnam .Semmangudi mAmA has taken renditions where his race to submain will be generally exhilirating , to say the least. Got the same with gowlai toppled with swaras. A brief first 5 seconds did appear as poorvikalyANish (less likely because of my ignorance , more likely because she may have just slipped a bit there), but the remaining 8 minutes was just cruising well along in pantuvarAli charged mode , I particularly love pantuvarAli as a sub main. Her neraval was very good , the swaras were right there almost as fast as semmangudi mamA

The effect of hindOlam following paNtuvarAli was perfect , another rare composition , perhaps most apt as it was from pApanAsam shivan's .Her thamizh diction was brilliant ,the two rounds of cittaswaras did not satisfy as she came up with another round of swaras. keeravAni thevaram vAnanai was definitely a low key rendition, with she referring the notes the concert took a hit in quality.The main was a tough one , her rendition of shankArabharanam alApanai was in two parts with violin return and was for 13 minutes. The krithi a rare one was a difficult terrain and at last her age showed up there , particularly her neraval was just average to good . A well rounded maNodharmA swaras was very good.

The greatness of any musician is perhaps having a very efficient self feedback mechanism. Though ponnnammAl's shankArabharanam was not as great as a main, she made up with all excellent rendition . PonnammAl's bowli alApanai saNgathi and swaras of parvathi nAyakaNe was outstanding . Since 2003,when in one of the concert where Shri PSN cried a little to sing varuvAro varAm tharuvArO referring semmangudi mamA's photo, the shyamA is a fitting tribute for semmangudi mAmA simply for his classicism undiluted even in tukkadAs. There was a rare krithi in dhanashree??(had touches of kar devaGaNdhAri ??) that was well presented that had a padmanAbha murdra.She wrapped with a brief SSI famous slOkham to give an excellent finish.

The mridangist maNoj shiva was excellent to outstanding , he played so well never disturbing the flow.His tani was just good to very good. THe violinist viNu was very good in replays , but in rAga alApanai there was violin nAdham that was just not enough.

OVerall a very good to excellent concert.I got an insight of 1940's to 60's concert

Hi Rajeshnat,

Parasala is near Nagercoil.When we lived in Ambasamudram many years (25) ago, PP was a regular in AIR - Tirunelveli concerts.So,there is no wonder about her tamil diction.

Like you rightly said I felt was put in a time machine and travelled back to the 40s.The music from this old lady brought tears to me.What a Hindolam or Shankarabharanam!The ease at which she sang some of the best sangathis was amazing.
