Smt. Ranjini and Gayathri sung a beautiful Abhang in their " Jaya TV - Margazhi Maha Utsavam" programme on 18.12.2008. The Abhang is composed by Sant.Thukkaram Maharaj and the song is " Bholava vittala pahava vittala " in rag Bhatiyar.

Rag Bhatiyar is a Hindusthani rag belongs to the Marwah That. The Raga ' Varnaroopini ' of the 17th mela janya has some similarity to the rag Bhatiyar (By changing the rishabham note - R2 of rag Mohanam to R1 will become rag Varnaroopini.) The aroh and avaroh of Bhatiyar is

Aroh: Sa Ma Pa Dha Ni Ri Sa
Avaroh: Sa Ni Dha Pa Ma Pa Ga Pa Ga RI Sa

The song can be download from the following url of youtube;

Rag: Bhattiyar: SMPDNRS-SNDPMPGPGRS

bolava vitthal pahawa vittal
karawa vittal jeewabhawa

yene sose man zale hawbhari
parati maghari ghet nahi

bandnapsoni ukalya gathi
deta aali mithi sawkashi

tuka mahne deh bahrila vittale
kaam krodhe kele ghar reete

Thanks for the info. I enjoyed the abhang and was wondering about the raga. Lakshman can enlighten us whether there are any CM compositions in it!

Here is one vacana of Basavanna, tuned in bhaTiyar, sung by Ragavan Maniyan. Listen to the very last video clip on this page:

What is a vacana?
vacana = "sayings" are poetry composed by the shiva sharaNas of Karnataka - Generally from the 11th -12th century.

They are a hybrid of poetry and prose, because they have a lyrical flow, but do not confirm to traditionally accepted meters - much like the ugAbhOgas that came in later during the haridAsa age.

Basavanna, Akkamahadevi, Allamaprabhu are some of the most important vacanakAras.

The works of Shiva sharanas seems to have been a source of inspiration for hari dAsas as well.
