Ramakanth vocal support Guruvaur Dorai mruthangam Shankar Ghatam
song list :
1. karikalaba mukham saveri
2. bharathi mathishana deva manohari
3. sri parvathi bowli
4. ramani samane karharapria
5. emithova palgu saranga
6. gandu dhanaya behaag
7. naade nanda thanaya yamunakalyani
8. hare venkata sindhu bharavi
i entered when they were mid saveri. it was a wonderful concert. Rashmi described it correctly as 'golden voice and silken strings'. it reminded of the olden days before violin occupied the center stage. Dorai was playing like how malcom marshall used to bowl for gavaskar. either the volume should be low or he should reduce the force. he however compensated in the thani with swiftness and subdued nadham. he should adopt the same sound volume while accompanying the artists.
it is some thing incredible that a 89 year old gentleman is able to sing without even a minor lapse in sruthi at any point of time. the vocal support was ok but needs some more time to start off on his own. here and there some sruthi lapses and omission of 'Nishadham' in bowli in the swara kalpana should have to be rectified. (RKS corrected the same immediately).
Ravikiran the established master himself proved himself to be worthy of being an accompaniment too. he did it without dominating at the same time making a mark for himself.
what happened to vasan? shankar was on the ghatam instead. his fingers were flying.
overall an excellent concert.

The concert started off with brief sketch of Sri, and Sri raga varnam. Brief raga was sung for all kritis and elaborated the ragas deva manohari, bowli, kharaharapriya. No neravals even for main piece, but who is complaining? I too noticed that ramakanth wasn't including nishadam in his bowli swaras only very sparingly. Ramakanth shared all major alapanais, with srikantan ending with tara sadjam and he picking up second round. It was little bit irritating to listen when ramakanth was supporting his father when raga was sung, when karvais were done. He could have done without it. Guruvayur dorai accompanied well throughout.
Vijay Siva was present attending the concert, and also met Arasi after concert and three of us had a short chat.

The first item was sAmi ninne, varnam in srI rAga/Adi tAla. Awesome varnam, awsomely delivered.
I too met Arasi after the concert. Also had the pleasure of meeting "vainika" ramki as well as sitting with vijay for most of the concert.
I found the volume extremely high and so did the mikeman but he feared the wrath of the rock-and-roll-eared chennai audience sitting in the front rows. So I had some surgical cotton quickly delivered, thanks to a resourceful driver who was also a keen rasika. After plugging a generous clump of cotton in each ear, the concert experience was wonderful. I recommend a roll of surgical cotton to all as a necessary tool for suviving the chennai "music" season without permanently damaging your ear drums, not to speak of the cochlea. Unfortunately the balance was so poor that the chitravina was sometimes not audible via the cotton mufflers. A big sacrifice but worth it in the end.
Vijay and I were sitting in the pink chairs at the back. I was wearing a white half-sleeved kurta and veshti and from what I can recall vijay a blue kurta and jeans and ramki a brown kurta and trousers. Of course, each descriptor is applicable to roughly 20% of the 150 odd folks present.

Very pleasant concert indeed.
The bauLi AlApanA and shrI pArvAti-paramEs'warau vandE were quite a treat, and Ravikiran's accompaniment was excellent. Despite the bauLi-to-rEvagupti defection, Ramakant redeemed himself with a good kharaharapriya AlApanA.
During the bEhag kRti on Udipi kRShNa (see Cleveland '08 clip at http://in.youtube.com/watch?v=SHK7VrKjqa4) I wondered if "yesu janma" was RKS' nod to today being Christmas, until my friend Kiran pointed out it is old Kannada for "yeshTu janma"(how many births)...
It was good to see Uday, earplugs and all, and hang out with Vijay post-concert. Wish I'd known Arasi and other rasikas s_hari and chalanata were in the audience - I'd have loved to say hi.
Now off to Monica Mody's reading at Prakruti's poetry festival.
