sri TNK was accompanied by his son and daughter. This was a typical TNK concert, nothing unusual. It was good to see sri TNK (at 80!) still playing with his usual enthusiasm. After the pantuvarali alapana, TNK started playing the first phrases of raghuvara, when his son interrupted him with "appa, we need to watch out for time" and then they choose to play a shorter composition. At the end of the piece, sriram apologised to the "raghuvara fans" in the audience! TNK's beautiful Kapi alapana had some intriguing phrases, (a slide from tara S to G, DN3S phrase hinted in a couple of places). The choice of natakurinji as main was nice and all the three shared the alapana which was elaborate, the swaras for sindubhairavi included some kathri swaras (chembai style). After the kamas piece, they were starting a piece in chencurutti when I left. Tiruvavor bhaktavatsalam and radhakrishnan on the ghatam provided excellent support.
Before this concert, I was lucky enough to attend the last 40 odd minutes of a hour long lec-dem by sri Nedunuri on annamacharya krithis. He was supported by the malladi brothers. It is always an absolute pleasure to hear sri nedunuri sing. He sang snippets of compositions in the ragas bowli, karaharapriya, khamas, hamasanadham and of course in the end he did sing nanati in revati. He gave some glimpses into the mind of a tunesmith, for instance he has set several krithis in the raga karaharapriya, he mentioned how he had used unusual phrases like (GPM) and how he had chosen sangathis to highlight the lyrics. For instance, in the krithi okapari kokapari oiyaaramai in karaharapriya, for the lyric "oiyaaramai", he used the phrases RG.MPM.P, RG.N.D.P, RG. RGMPDND P etc. to give it a suitable gait. A very enjoyable and informative lec-dem, even in the short phrases that he sang in each raga, sri nedunuri was able to indicate the depth of his musical ideas. Truly a great artist! The mini-hall was just overflowing and also had a fair number of vidwans in attendance like TVS, PSN, Umayalapuram Sivaraman, TRS etc.
