Well... what a concert it was ! I was sitting by the stage and happened to observe name of the mineral water that was served to the artistes - "Team" ! That just about summarizes today's concert. What a team effort that was.
Manjunath was terrific and at times I was even left with the feeling that Manjunath excelled Sanjay. At times it appeared as if Manjunath was simultaneously reading Sanjay's mind even as Sanjay was thinking of kalpana swaras - the anticipation and the way Manjunath followed Sanjay like a "chaya". It was apt that many "chaaya" ragas were sung today. What a fantastic violinist Manjunath is !
The percussionists were excellent in their accompaniment and they added a lot of lustre to the concert. However, probably owing to time constraints, the thani seemed very short and simple. Nothing to take away any credit from the excellent percussion support that they provided.
Kanimozhi (Tamilnadu CM , Karunanidhi's daughter) , in the audience, must have surely enjoyed the well-emoted tamil songs that Sanjay rendered.
A great concert overall.

Maithree - hopefully Kanimozhi enjoyed all the songs irrespective of the language...for there were many fine non-tamizh songs as well.
BTW any idea what raga this Chaya Ranjni is all about?
Odd to see kambhoji main since the next concert at the Academy will also feature the same as main. Maybe this was a "practise" session!
really looking forward to the Academy concert. Hope I will get tickets.

Chayaranjani RTP was sung earlier this season by D Vardhani as part of the RTP series in Gokhale Sastri Hall.

It is a Janya of Shubhapanthuvarali I guess.

From the description in Karnatik.com, it is neither a janya of Shubha Pantivarali or Simhendramadhyamam. It should be a derivative of Shanmukhapriya/BHavapriya unless there is some other version.
This is another one of what may now be called Sanjay's Abheri-based series. Patdeep, Abheri, Madhuvanti and this one (not counting Rishabha) all follow the same broad pattern. Multani is also one and I hope Sanjay attacks this soon!

This is the sixth forumite reporting. The concert could have been elevated to a much higher platform ifa) a Inthasowkhya was sung as a Kapi krithi b)an elaborate alapana for Khamboji was sung and c) if the RTP could have been shortened both the raga alapana and the thanam was reflecting flavour of too many ragas. This is precisely the reason that such ragas should be stretched to the permissible limit This is not to take away anything from his brilliant performance.I was reminded of a concert which TNK attended and he started singing Tiruvadicharanam without an alapana. He was chided and asked to sing an elaborate raga alapana by TNK and he then sang the alapana.Such krithis imortalised by greats like Madurai Mani Iyer Musiri and KVN. This had a lingering effect. Some how yesterdays concert lacked such a profound effect. No swarasinging for the pallavi was in fact improper planning. On the whole a letdown performance, which was good but could have heightened the pleasure of listening with what I said earlier. Bye Ragjay

TM Krishna was the singer and the violinist TN Krishnan asked TMK to sing an AlAP in kAmbOdhi right.

I agree with Ragjay. The concert till kambodhi was lacklustre. His voice was not at its best till then. Tiruvadi charanam was rendered brilliantly compensating for the lack of alapanai. If Sanjay had decided not sing alapanai to accomadate the RTP, then he didn't do justice there also. Literally there was no pallavi singing , he just launched in to ragamallika and again no swaras. Chaya ranjani alapana and thanam were excellent but a bit too long. Mysore Nagaraj, Thanajvur Ramadass and Neyveli Venkatesh provided brillinat support and elevated th concert. Overall a good concert but no where near the best of Sanjay's concerts.

I have to differ. I found the elevation of kApi to sub-main slot a refreshing change and was really thrilled by the rendition of both Sanjay and Manjunath especially tha raga alapana.rajumds wrote: The concert till kambodhi was lacklustre.

I felt he screwed up his voice during the tara sthayi excursions in chaya tarangini krithi. He just couldn't get it back. But, I would still place this concert far above the other ones I had attended this season and it's a tribute to this man's concert presentation skills that hes able to delight the audience even with a recalcitrant voice.

Hi,
It is not about Sanjay's performance . If you have a different opinion about Sanjay's concert, I will have nothing to say. It is about the word. There can be
a big debate if the word is normal or unusual usage. But not needed. In a long run , we donot want to write like "an artist X screwed Kalyani (raga)" and
it can get as bad as that and we cannot insist people to feel as normal as ever.
Another point is , If I know you well, I wouldnot have written that. But I guess someone else would have felt that. Sorry for the distraction in this post.
I will stop here.
