I was one of those fortunate to hear Sri Manakkal Rangarajan sing yesterday. He start was quite brisk, he sang Abhogi varnam in two kalams. For sobillu saptaswara, he sang chittaswarams, and while swara kalpana - koraippu swarams, he was ending alternative avarthanam with shadjam and tara stayi sadjam alternatively. The final round of swara was with arohanam, avarohanam in different speeds. For gopanandana, he sang swarams initially at gopanandana, and later shifted to padasarasa, utilizing swaraksharam, and this was with eduppu before samam. Tatvameruga tarama was sung in madhyama kalam, i expected some swaras but not so. Panchashatpeeta roopini was a surprise choice of main item, i thought were he will do neraval. There is not much space in devi jagadjanani, but he did do brief neraval and sang swaras. Bharatiyar's chinnamchiru kiliye had ragams, maand, simmendramadhyamam?, mohanam, neelambari etc. Atana javali was very lively.
Despite his old age, he gave vintage performance, one could easily image how he would have sung 30 years ago during his prime. VVRavi provided good support in violin, so are his wife & son in vocal support and mrudangam.

Thanks to all of you for review, pictures and music. Just look at the start ,even though I cannot subjectively give an opinion , AbhOgI varnam for a 85 year old vidwan is itself a testimony for this mahAvidwan. I had to miss this concert to attend another mahAvidwan that was kind of not a right move.

Thank you! Thank you Prasanna.mr
The pictures and the audio clips transported me to the land of bliss.
I loved his tuning of the entire chinnanchiRu kiLiye; Bharathi will be jumping with joy if he were alive! Just amazed at the clarity and the control of the veteran at this age! He is indeed the Living Icon of CM classicism. May he live long and keep the art alive!
My prostrations to him!
