Hi all,

I was there at Rani Seetai hall for the concert and it was a wholesome concert . Despite voice problems , TMK brought out some superb manodharmam in Jana ranjani ragam . The Dikshitar piece -Sri Dhakshinamurthe was well handled and the tani was electrifying with ganjira Purushothamman giving perfect replies to Maestro Trichi Shankarans Kanakkus. What a tani it was . Varadarajan on the violin was superb barring the Pallavi Trikaalam where he struggled.

Bilahari - The Mangalam was in the form of a slokam " Mangalam Kosalendraya " sung continuously with the Vande Mataram song .

I had to shell out a fair amount of money for this concert as a result of which I found myself deposited right in front of the stage - my second "senior rasika" moment of the season! The veterans around me were keeping time with practised elegance. I joined them during some of the sarvalaghu passages but recalled a nightmarish concert experience during which this habit of mine brought the proceedings on stage to an abrupt end, and wisely abandoned my pretense! I will be back in the cheap seats from the next concert!

The concert started very well with Kaanda Varnam/Lathangi and the mellow rendition of Cheta Sri Balakrishnam was a pleasant contrast but somehow Dwijavanthi, Sankarabharanam and Janaranjani over 3 hours seemed a little repetitive (the Natabhairavi and Thodi krithis were no longer than 5 minutes each) although each of these items was very well rendered. It was really refreshing when Krishna sang swarams in Shanmukhlapriya - now, that would been a great choice for the RTP. I did not notice the voice problems though...

Just wondering whether it is unusual for a pallavi like this to be discussed and rehearsed by both the vocalist and violinist before the concert? Or maybe it was just a momentary lapse of concentration from Varadarajan who is normally quite alert. I felt he could have let it pass and do a simple neraval rather than try something he was not too confident about. Anyway he played exceptionally well otherwise...

A great tani too - a nice korvai for Misra Jhampa - IIRC, done over four avarthanas + 2 matras (i. e 162 matras).

Was there a rAga mAliga in alApanai , or did the krithi had ragamAliga sAhityam.
How long was the tani in minutes??.
Was there also another round of mini tani at the end of RTP.?

There was RM AlApana! The Bhoopalam-like (to my ears!) strains of Revagupti followed by tarangini (which TMK announced) did a lot to perk me up and set high expectations for the rest of the concert....only to be follwed by a very very sleep-inducing (it could have been just me :) !) chEtaSri - I found the SankarAbharanam AlApana equally soporific but highly enjoyed the swara rounds in the main - in fact the swara rounds were most appealing in every time the TMK-Varadarajan duo took up one. At one point Varadarajan led the swara essay and TMK followed him, which was very pleasing to see/hear. The electric misra-jhampa tani made everyone sit up and nicely set things up for the RTP that followed. Yes there was a smallish tani at the end of RTP as well. All in all, a great 'peak' season-ending concert for me. Of course my season will stretch till end of March thanks to Hamsadhwani!

rajeshnat- the kriti was sananda kamala manohari as ksrimech made a correction earlier
the krithi had ragamalika sahityam with raaga mudras in it..
tani was for about 25 minutes
there was no mini tani..
the former was ecstatic enough :-)

Hmmmm....the 2 minute 'tani' with RTP wasn't a tani technically then?

There was a quick tani at the end of the RTP with a korvai...I guess this is what Rajesh refers to as a mini-tani

Forgot to add that the 'Mangalam' was embedded within item 12 "vande mataram" - 'Mangalam Kosalendraya ...' woven within the Desh piece towards the end and the concert ended with the words Vande Mataram!

It is SAnandam kamalAmanoharinam and not all those things.. this song is interesting,(and controversial) because it has a tarangini passage - which SSIyer has sung in the proper CHarukeshi janyam way, while Semmangudi himself was the most vehement proponent of Maaye being sung in the popular tune they do - Janjooti passed off as tarangini, claiming that it is sudha-tarangini.

Unfortunately no one asked Semmangudi how this song - Saanandam (which also has the phrase kshIra-tarangini) could be song in one version of the rAga, while MAye is sung in the JanjUti clone - Sudha-tarangini!

Sudha = KshIra

Both Main and Pallavi items are in his commercial release album's'. May be he should have taken a different song for main or different raga for pallavi.
But I liked both the renditions in his albums and a live peerformance will be terrific experience from TMK.
