if you spot talent in child and want to contribute in his/her growth in carnatic music, how does one go about it. Given the pranks and distractions, does one need to be regimented and disciplined to nurture the art in the child. How does one accomplish this without spoiling the fun of childhood.

Vidya Raja - your observation matches with your name. When I was 3 years old, my dad, a motivational sampradaya bhajan singer, used to take me with him and when I turned to my teens, I wanted to be as far away as I can from my dad's bhajan. I got seriously interested in music after 62 years and many of the songs I sing now are those I learnt through osmosis from my dad. He is no more around us but his songs are still ringing in my ears and I sing those to my hearts pleasure.
Thank you for that inspiration thought.

Actually there was an interesting article by Kiranavali Vidyashankar about how his father taught them while they were young kids and it was posted in this forum also earlier.

That should also be noted.
Mods can u please post the link here .

Bringing up talented children is a difficult task. It is possible to leave them alone to blossom on their own. It is possible to guide them so that they do not proceed in the wrong path. It is possible to mould them into something the world will applause.

Music cannot become a passion for a child prodigy unless the child has the poorva janma vasana. One famous example is Ustaad Allauddin Khan. He had such a passion for music that he would go to any length to achieve it. He left Dacca all the way for Rampur and waited for many years before his teacher would adopt him. Pt.Omkarnath Thakur, Abdul Karim Khan, and Kumar Gandharva belong to this category. In CM, I know a few examples like Veena Balachandar, Flute Mali, Palghat Mani Iyer, and recently Mandolin Srinivas who took up to music without any parental compulsion.

In music families it has been a practice to compel children to take up music (the family tradition) just as in the case of any family in the bygone ages. Very few parents gave music to their children in a loving manner. The fathers had been merciless while teaching their children. Alathoor Venkatesa Iyer was so strict with his son Subbu that he ran away to a local music lover’s house and had to be cajoled back to his house. It was only because of the strictness of father Vidwan A. Narayana Iyer that we are able enjoy the music of TNK. Ustad Allauddin Khan used to lockup Ali Akbar Khan in room for the whole day without food - it was also because Ali Akbar Khan was fond more of out door life than indoor practice ! Many violinists have broken their bows hitting at the student child.

To shine as a world class musician one has to put in extraordinary effort. He could ill afford to read magazine, go to cinemas, play with friends, to have hobbies or go round enjoying nature because every minute is precious. A child does not know about this and only the teacher would know about it. A child without any special taste for music but has extraordinary talent can also become a world class musician by submitting to a very strict regimen. Ask any world class artist, and most of them will say that they never enjoyed child hood days like other children. They might have hated music in their childhood but loved it dearly in their later life. Coolkarni’s quote of Sidney Poitier is very apt "Did you get my approval for all that. Did you give me a Choice ? If you did not , then it because you did whatever you did because you thought it best.Nothing More-Nothing Less".

Not enforcing discipline on children might make them good musicians, great music lovers and may not be beyond that. It might not take them to world category.
