AS I was denied tickets for the academy combo concert of nithyashree and TNS , decided to hear in this little distant sabha. To me if mylapore and tnagar are the 1st and 2nd pockets of CM , I would assume KKnagar west and virugambAkkam could be a very good third pocket .The concert was delayed by 25 minutes , had an oppurtunity to hear few beautiful flute sangathis from vijayagOpal in s'bharanam and yam kalyANi and a vibrant tani from Bangalore sudheendra.
Shri NGS has one of the best male voice a deep toned one though not as best as 90's but still one of the best . His vidwat is generally more centered in layam . His start in evari bOdhana was sparkling though his voice was little drowned by BSP kanjirA and mridangam.
The second in bahudAri was excellent through out with some manOdharma patterns that were bit short but still sparkling . THe pick of the day was certainly his reetigowlai , particularly neraval in this masterpiece song with a round of amazing creativity in swaras with he centering on a brand new pattern , had a great piDi centered on sa sA.
mOhanam alApanai was very good, though at few places towards the end he was bit sagging , but he had MAS tonic with him he is just too brilliant there he just ensured that NSG delivers a perfect one . THe krithi was nannu pAlimpA , very happy to hear that though I prefer mOhana rAma , but certainly usually musicians take that as neraval is generally not sung here . The swaras were very good to excellent .
The percussion team was excellent to outstanding throughout , particularly easwarans play is brilliant , he was strokeful for songs not banging , then during tani he was showing aggression. BSP played beautifully and gave an excellent tani.
There was a brief speech by the sabha patron(Is he the same SAranATHAN who is also the vocalist) . It was brief and right . There was no exodus in the tani , there was just overwhelming participation .NSG's voice was perfect he mentioned romba aNandama irukku (he was elated)before mOhanam. Everything appeared atleast perfect for another 30 minutes of music , but NSG decided to wrap up in 5 to 10 minutes with enna thavam and maitreem bhajatha. Atleast a slokham /viruththam would have been a nice drop (certainly not asking for a pallavi here)
Overall when the slot is a prime slot with the whole night open , why are few musicians wrapping up the concert in 2 hours + concert ,despite a 10 minute speech and 18 minutes tani. Overall a very good to excellent mini concert.
