vinatA suta - jayanta sEnA - Adi - T (R)
sarasvati namOstutE - sarasvati - rUpakam - GNB
dEvi jagatjanani - shankarAbaraNam - Adi - ST (RNST)

Varnam was redered nicely in two speeds. varALi AlApanai was excellent, occassionally moving and the violinist gave a good reply. The kriti was extremely beautiful, and the lyrics and the music were juse meant for each other, as is almost always true of Tyagaraja kritis. jayanta sEnA was superb, and violinist's reply was OK (if it was his first attempt at this rAga, it was great; he picked up some material from the vocalist's essay). Once again, I was touched by the greatness of Tyagarajaswamy -- this time in creativity. The vocalist named this rAgam and the composer of the following song in sarasvati too. SankarAbharaNam was begun very classically, and beautifully carved phrases came out for the stop at pa. It went on that way till stopping at the tAra Shadjamam. A few shades of kalyANi appeared there. (But I may have been listening ultra-carefully, because the earlier parts of the AlApanai had indeed grabbed all my attention.) Again, the upper gAndhAram and higher apparently took a lot of effort for the vocalist. But he put in all of it and more, and the penultimate brigha passages in the essay were lovely. The violinist gave a good, more orthodox AlApanai in reply.

Bharat Sundar had wonderful sarvalaghu svarams, especially for varALi, they were just flowing in the madhyamakAlam. (I find the cApu tALam very beautiful in general.) The vilamba svarams were full of rAgabhAvam too. His neravals were also very fluent. In Sankarabharanam svarams, there was some delving on GMPMG--RGSRG, the final G coming on a stressed beat, the phrases sung in many kAlapramANams. There were korvais to finish varALi and SankarAbharaNam's swarams, which were followed well by the mridangist. The tani was good also.

I left after the tani.

A very effective concert.

RTP - kIravANi - Adi (2 kaLai)
kancadaLAyadAkshI kAmAkshI kamalA manOharI tripura sundarI
rAgamAlika svaram in kamalAmanOhari
tsallarE rAmachandruni - Ahiri - misra cApu - T
tillAnA - khamAs - Adi - LGJ
adala sEDan ADa - kalyANi, Anandabhairavi, sAmA, suruTTi - one rUpakam followed by one kaNDa cApu - Thiruppugazh
nI nAma rUpamulaku - saurAshTram - Adi - T

It was a very well presented concert. All the kritis were rendered beautifully also taking care of sensible splitting of sAhityam. The AlApanais were done in a elaborate fashion and included all the classical phrases. The neraval and svarams were all done with effortless ease. The vocalist excelled himself in both kalpitam and manOdarmam parts and made it a good concert. The accompanists were good and added to the concert very effectively
