I happened to be at Sudha Raghunathan’s concert for Bharat Kalachar. Well, after listening, I felt I had to express my amazement at the content, the outcome and the experience. Her selections were as follows:
Began with an adi taala varnam in raagam ranjani - composed by GNB
A sholoka shri raghavam
Jaya Jaya in naattai, kanda chapu talam of Purandara Dasa
Dinamani vamsa in hari kamboji - Thyagaraja
Annapurne in sama - Dhikshitar
Amruthavarshini - kriti of Muthiah Bhagavathar
RTP in thodi,
Ragamalika swaras in khamboji, simhendramadhyamam, kaanada and naatai kurinji
Listeners’ choice - kurai onrum illai, baro krishnayya, vallikanavan
Thillana in brindavani
It was a concert full of life and I think the musican was in perfect control. The swaras flowed to a smooth crescendo in Jaya Jaya. Annapurne was soothing. Post the amruthavarshini rendering, with befitting support (on the violin by Raghavendra Rao, Patri Satish Kumar mridangam and Raman, morshing), Sudha Raghunathan made a mention of the raga amurthavarshini known to bring in the rains when sung with fervour. She had quoted two experiences, one at Doha and the other at Delhi when it just poured after the concert where this raga was sung! She then had a rejoinder saying I don’t know if this will bring in rain but it will definitely rain happiness in 2009 for all.
But you know, what was amazing was, it did rain at night and continues to be damp even as am writing. Is it the musician’s devotion that moved the Gods, is it that it is prone to rain in Chennai during Marghazhi, thus making it a happy coincidence or is it that it is a continued reiteration that music indeed takes you to heaven!!
Whatever analogy one draws, I must say that it was a truly enchanting evening with Sudha Raghunathan being in full form, Mrs. YGP endorsing the performance mid way calling her the ‘uncrowned queen of carnatic music’ and the delightful way in which she maneuvered with the ragas, creating such an aural treat.

Yes, was there for this concert and it was an abosorbing one. Whether it is a coincidence or not, the rains that came post the concert truly makes one pause and wonder at the treasures that our country possesses..carnatic music, the raagas, the effect that each one of them has in their own way..all conceived, defined and practised by beings who must certainly be having a divine connect. A tradition well passed on by learned gurus to equally imbibing sishyas.DhwaniB wrote:
