It was raining, right from 3pm and it did not stop us from having a decent crowd at RABJS.
Mohan Santhanam began his recital with the varNam of Lalgudi, whose compositions have the lyrical and rhythmical beauty along with bhAvA laden essence of the rAga. Padma felt like being home with the varNam. After Arabhi adding some more grip to the concert, he sang a brief AlApanA of chArukEsi and presented madhyama kAla swarAs.
mAlavi too had swarAs followed by an interesting kOrvai set with sa ri ga ma pa ni ma dha ni sa*, the ArohaNa of the rAgam.
thOdi contained sruthi bEdham (mOhanam)and some nAdhaswara sangathis too. Both Mohan and Padma did the sketch well. There was no niraval or swara for this and he took bEgadA for RTP. One of the fine AlApanAs I heard in this season and Mohan displayed good manO dharma, breath control in kArvais, sanchArams and in brugAs as well.
The niraval swaram and thrikAlam were done neatly. Thani was in pallavi. We played chathusra gathi and thisram a little and a mOrA [280 aksharAas - 4 AvarthAs] and kOrvai [70 aksharAs - 1 Avartham].
krishNanai dhinam dhinam ninai - manamE nI maravAmal was the pallavi. Eduppu samam.
[Kri,shNa nai,, dhinam,, dhinam,, ni//nai,, ,,, mana, mE//, nI, mara, vA, mal,]
Nerkunam Shankar played well.
The concert ended with madhyamAvathi and traditional mangaLam.

yes, really it was lovely....
I played a 56 akshara kOrvai of UKS sir in mEl kAlam, from ninai manamE to krishNanai, played the same from ninai (two akshrAs before arudhi) to maravAmal and played it again from samam (krishNanai) to 'ninai'.
The construction was so beautiful that if started from avanai, the quetion is who. I got the answer it is krishNA, as the kOrvai reached there.
Ok, I know it is krishNA, what I should do? Think of him. So, when playing the same from samam, it reached ninai.
Ok, I do smaraNa, why? maravAmal. I can never forget by the smaraNa which is just like a thaila dhArA, uninterrupted, the purpose of bakthi through music and also the chant during vaikuNta EkAdhasi is done. When played from ninai, it reached maravAmal.
maravAmal - krishNanai - ninai.
The distance between these words were same 56 aksharAs = 14 beats. The existance of pramAthmA in all the 14 lOkams...
On the way back, krishNA occupied my manas, obviously I was singing krishNA in begada.
