S. Sowmya, BU Ganesh Prasad, HS Sudheendra
Asthika Samajam, Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai - Jan 10th 2009 6.30 pm

Evari Bodha (Varnam) - Abhogi - Adi - PSI
Sivakama Sundari - Jaganmohini - Rupakam - GKB (r sketch, s at 'jaganmohini...')
Sogasuga Mridanga - Shriranjani - Rupakam - T (r, s at 'yutakritiche')
Ananda Natana Prakasam - Kedaram - Mishra Chapu - MD (Arudra Darsanam special!)
Varanarada - Vijayasri - Adi - T (N & S "prakatambu...')
Gajamba Nayako - Senjurutti (Janjhooti) - Adi - MD (Surprise item with a fairly elaborate alapana!)
Devi Pavane - Saveri - Adi - ST (r, n & s at 'samajapungava...')
Tani Avarttanam
Speech by Narasimhan Mama
Parulanna Mata (Javali) - Kapi - Rupakam - Dharmapuri Subbarayar
Ninnaye Rati - Bharatiyar
Marukkulaviya (Tiruppuagzh) - Purvikalyani - Arunagirinathar
Mangalam

My favorite artiste, favorite venue (coziness-wise, not acoustically!), a Senjurutti alapana and rare MD kriti that swept me off my feet, very sensitive & sensible percussion support from Sudheendra*, clean bowing by BUG and to top it all the customary speech in chaste Kumbhakonam Tamil from Narasimhan mama... enough ingredients for what, to me, was a great evening. Sowmya rules!! :)

* I think our friend KNV should listen more to such fine artistes like Sudheendra, Neyveli Narayanan, Embar Kannan etc before making sweeping comments on present-day accompanists :)

rupavati,
I am assuming Ninnaye Rati - Bharatiyar was sung in sindhubhairavi , sudheendra is indeed a very nice mridangist , his strokes and his face also resembles srimushnam Raja rao, he can be rightly called bangalore srimushnam

Rajesh, and his sishyA too.

Rupavathi,
I realize that even in Chennai, the name Bengaluru (old Bangalore) iis getting established--though some Chennaites still call their city Madras.
I would have loved to have heard Sowmya's elaborate chenjurutTTi...

The Music Academy souvenir mentioned that Smt Sowmya was gonna sing shivakAmasundari... I was really looking forward to it... Too bad it turned up so late... N chenjuruTTi reminds me of the RTP she sang at the Academy couple of yrs ago... IIRC, sAvEri was main on that day too...

The Varanarada was a particularly impressive piece. The only break in the concert was probably Narasimhan Mama's never ending speech.
Any way, that can be excused as he is a 'foodie' all right with his frequent references to Sakkara pongal and other such delights.

not very often do we see artists singing a madhyama sruthi piece before the main.
i have known of this only twice. Once it was Kalpakam mami, taking up 'hastivadanAya' right at the beginning of her concert and once it was Manda Sudharani, who took up 'srI vENugOpAla' with an elaborate AlApanai.

nice list from sowmya. wish i had attended.
and what more, it dint have poorikalyani ;)
