I was wondering if anyone can give the line by line (or word by word) translation of 'Thirisila Giriyaar'...

I have the words but am not sure that they are 100% correct, so if anyone has the proper lyrics that would be helpful as well. If not, I can type up the version I have.

Thanks.

Here is my translation . Corrections welcome

O fortunate(bhAgiya vathiyE) girl (peNNE), come quickly (sheekiram vADi )! We need to see (dharisanam vENDum)! If even for a day(oru nAL), one sees( dharisanam kaNDAl) the Lord of Tiruchirapalli(thirisira giriyAr), his sins will be resolved ( kalitheerum )

Manmatha came with his lovely bow (varisilai mAran).
The lord with anger(kObam Aghiya murthi )directed(vAithidum ) there (angE), such that Manmatha's life was taken( madanAR uyir pOga) with the flame from one eye (thanaiyoru vizhiyAl) , is also one who showers boons and promises freedom from fear to all (varadhAbhaya murthi)

O doe-eyed one with lily-like eyes(alli vizhi mAnE) O one who speaks sweetly like a parrot(kiLi mozhi yALE ), O well-dressed one, sweet as honey(alankAra thEnE) ! Who don't you come and see (kANEn) the well-bedecked form (alankAramum ) of Sugandha-kuntaLambika (maTTUvAr-kuzhalammai) and Mathrubhutheshwara ?

O delicate lighning-like beauty! (naLina min azhaghi ) ! Climb the hill (
malai dhanil yEri) and look around in all 4 directions (nAlu pakkamum pAru ) ! There (angE) (you can see) Jambukeshwara (nAvaLin nAthar ) and Akhilandeshwari (akhilambAL) and the ancient ( munnAL sollum) Srirangam!

Note: The Trichy Rock-fort has the shrines of Shiva and Parvati, known there as Mathrubhutheshwara and Sugandha-kuntaLamba. From the hill top, which has a charming temple of Ganesha, it is possible to see the temples of Thiruvanaikka (Jambukeshwaram) and Srirangam.

Great translation as usual, Rajani!

It is aLi vizhi mAdE (woman with eyes resembling the bees--for their darkness, darting?--aLi=vaNDu ) to go with kiLi mozhi.

Good translation Rajani. This song,, when sung by Sanjay in Srirangam, was requested "once more" by rasikas. It is a delight to see this "scene" really when one goes to "Uchi Pillayar Koil".

My 2 cents

Alankara Tere- Decorated chariot
& varkuzhal- another name for "mattuvar kuzhalammai"

Rajani,

NICE!!

How does maTTuvAr kuzhali translate as sugandhikuntalAmbAL? I get the kuzhali and kuntalAmbAl part.

Ravi - I am stumped. I have always known that the goddess is called maTTuvAr kuzhali and sugandhikuntalAmbAL in Tamil and Sanskrit. Don't know what "maTTu" means. Hope someone can help.

Few words mentioned in the meaning are different from song.

Correct words (I think)

Tirisira Giri
varisilai mARan
thanaiyoru vizhiyal- (I have a doubt what is the meaning of thanai ?)
or is it "thanaluru vizhiyaal". (thanal means the heat from the fire).

Grs - thanks for your kind words . Yes I did change some words where I thought it must be different. Forgot to mention that.

Arasi: kuntalam=kuzhal=hair/braid
So I infer maTTu=sugandhi(sweet-smelling)
What is vAr ? It may be maTTu + Ar
BTW I have also seen Goddess's names like "ElavArkuzhali" (having hair smelling of cardamom). This corresponds to one of the 300 names in Lalita Trishati - ElA-sugandhi-cikurA

Rajani,
maTTu = tEn ; maTTu + Ar + kuzhali = maTTuvAr kuzhali ; tEn niraindha malargaL Arndha kuzhal.

Mattu occurs variously in Cilappatikaram - where Kannaki addresses Kopperuntevi and says MattuvAr Sadayan pirandha padiyil etc,
Tiruvacakam, Arunagirinathar uses it in maTTUrkuzhal mangaiyar maiyal valaippaTTu (in the usual CMline on women as temp'tresses') or
even in the invocatory piece Kaittala niRaikani which ends with maTTavizh malarkodu paNivEnE. Note that the word maTTu is not used to denote 'honey' in a generic sense (in which case the person with the epithet would end up being Snigdhakuntala!) but used in Tamil as a context-specific word for a tiny droplet of honey (which is found in flowers) and hence the flower imparting the Sugandha to the Kuntala.

Vidya, thanks for the brilliant explanation. I can now see "maTTu" in "maTTiTTa punnai" ( in the Poompavai padigam) too.

Vidya,

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't ambAL supposed to have naturally fragrant hair (subject of the debate between nakkIrar and Siva)? But maTTuvAr kuzhali implies that the fragrance is imparted by the flowers.

And along a slightly divergent line, does kaRRai kuzhal simply mean 'braided hair'

kaTRai is a bunch of something--however, kaTRai kuzhali signifies a woman endowed with beautiful hair--thick strands of it.

Sandeep,
The lyrics folks have done their homework for you. Hope you are going to sing this song in your forthcoming concerts. A toughie for someone who grew up in the US, but you impressed me with your tamizh songs this season. Staying in India the past two years (?) has definitely honed your tamizh pronunciation besides your music.

Thanks Arasi... I already sang it last week for Chennai Sangamam. But I will surely sing it again in upcoming concerts, now that I have the proper pronunciation.

Thanks everyone!
