The series of four Violin Concerts , in memory of Sangita Kalanidhi Marungapuri Gopalakrishna Iyer , held at Raga Sudha Hall came to a conclusion with a Violin Duet by Vittal Ramamurthy and Padma Sankar on 21st Jan. 2009. Arun Prakash supported them on the mrudangam.
The opening of the concert with the Sriraga Pancharatna Endaro Mahanubhavulu underpinned the quiet dignity and repose which pervaded the entire concert.. Instrumental virtuosity subserved aesthetic sensibilities to provide enjoyable music. Belonging to the same Lalgudi school and with instinctive mutual understanding, duetting flowed naturally.
Kanchadalayadakshi (Kamalamanohari) was offered next. A short and sprightly Abhogi by Vittal prefaced Gopalkrishna Bharathi’s Sabhapathikku Veru Deivam . Padma then played a comprehensive Kalyani with a brief smattering of exotic flourishes . Nidhi Chala Sukhama was the Krithi. Niravathi Sukadha (Ravi chandrika) was given its due as a krithi and not as a mere filler.
The main raga Kapi was explored in a leisurely manner. With deft touches Vittal explored the many enchanting shades of this raga. Intha Sowkhyamani Ne was rendered in a glorious fashion with many Madurai Mani Iyer touches. (especially Jeppa Jala ).
.
Akhilandeswari (Dwijavanthi) and the thillana in Behag were the concluding items.
Arun Prakash was, as usual, astounding in his sensitive support. Shunning loudness throughout, it was mrudu to the ear all through. Great to have his support to any music.
Enjoyable instrumental music. And a fit conclusion to the series. And a matter of comfort at the sizeable attendance.
