There was a TNS concert in Sastri hall , Luz arranged by Indian council for cultural relations and Sri Ariyakudi Music foundation yesterday. It was an astounding concert and the hall was full with people standing for want of space. It was wholly reminiscent of Aiyakudi, who is the great pithamaha of sangeetham, as TNS remarked ,because he was the one who established the format for a Kutcheri which is being followed till today.Mentionng this TNS also sang one of his very recent compositions in sanskrit, composed that day just before the concert on Sri Purandaradasa , the pithamaha of the carnatic sangeetham in malahair! Of course the main piece of the day was "srisubramanyaya m namasthe.' in kambhodhi! The ragas and svaras and the rendering of the songs were reminiscent of Ariyakudi style with the embellishments exclusive of that of TNS.
The list of songs are given below.TNS was accompanied by S.Varadarajan on the violin and Trichur C.Narendran on mridangam both of them adding support effiiciently in accordance with the general mood of the concert.
1. Thodi varnam
2.'apparamabhakthi' of Thyagaraja in panthuvarali, preceded by a beautiful raga alapana
3.'entharo mahanubhavulu, the pancharathna of Thyagraja in sreeraga
4.Raga alapana of yadhukulakambhodhi which was fascinating
5. 'heccharigagarara' of thyagaraja in a leisurely pace rendered with full raga bhava and sahithya bhava.,with svara also at 'ninnujoodavacchi'
6.A short speech bt TNS on Ariyakudi and Purandaradasa and his own composition on Purandara in sanskrit 'dasaSreshta dhayanidhim vandheham' in malahari preceded by a short alapana of malahari
7.'varanarada ' of Thyagaraja in vijayasri, with svara at prakatambu.
8.Elaborate and fantastic alapana of kambhodhi
9. sri subramanyaya namasthethe ,' the forte of Ariyakudi, added with embellishments of TNS
10.A padham of kshethrajna in saveri
11.'mohanavalli,' in manji of kvikunjarabharathi from azagar kuravanji, the bhava of which was excellent
12.Thiruppavais in ragamalika ending in sindhubhairavi each one being a raga alapana by itself, the topping one was sindhubhiravi.
13. Mnagalam .pavmana.'
As a rasika who has attended almost all the concerts of TNS in the season the impression gathered was that the music of TNS goes on scaling higher and higher dimensions and each concert trying to excel other so that sky is the limit! In this particular concert the ragabhava and sahithyabhava were competing with each other and it was a great treat for the rasikas. The members from this forum who attended the concert will agree fully with me. This is a factual review of the concert and the writings about it in my usual format giving more details will appear in my sulekha blog and group pages of [email protected] in due course.

A few 'Manodharmam' additions to the list..
1) Era Napai - Thodi Adi Tala Varnam - S
2) Aparama Bhakthi - ANS
3) Entharo Mahanubhavulu
4) Hecharikaga - ANS
5) Dasasreshta - Malahari - O
6) Varanarada - S
7) Shri Subrahmanyaya - ANST
Was a fine concert. Started a bit late. Kambhoji Ragam was a bit short maybe due to paucity of time. But he made up for the brevity in the Virutham section. Was a very elaborate Virutham. Personally liked the Yadukulakambhoji Krithi rendition and the Saveri Padam. The accompanists did a fine job. The violinist was good in all his responses. Maybe could have done better in the Virutham. The Mrudangam was seasoned as well. TNS apologised for using notes for the Malahari Krithi as he said he had composed it only a few hours back. He also added that he usually doesn't sing Krithis that he has composed.
Overall was a good concert with a fine team.

The kambhodhi appeared to be ealborate though the time may be shorter than expected but the quality of the alapana was such that it was equal to an elaborate alapana. TNS proved what he said about Ariyakudi's concerts by showing that a raga can be portrayed fully in one hour or fifteen minutes or even less. The alapana left nothing unexplored in the raga.
