Here is an article (in English) I wrote for the February issue of 'Guru Sarvabhouma', a monthly published by Sri Raghavendra Matha.Mantralaya ( www.srsmutt.org) - Wanted to share this with other rasikas on this day.

Ramakriya,
Thanks for posting this. The dEvanAgari script makes it easier for us slow or no readers of kannaDa.

Ramakriya,
Thanks for the "reminder".

It's a pity purandaradAsa utsava is not organized and celebrated the way it should be.

Two years back, when I visited haMpi and spent some time in the purandara mantapa, it was an emotional visit for me who grew up on a feast of purandara (and other haridAsa) kRtis at home. Also, my GrandFather bhairavi lakshminAraNappa's death anniversary is the same day as purandaradAsa's.

The purandara mantapa has not been well maintained. Several groups of people were using it as a picnic spot, spilling all kinds of food and garbage in the mantapa. Yet another testimony of us kannaDigas not taking pride in our treasures.

Kulkarni Sir and Venkatpv Sir,
Thanks for the treats!

Any volunteers to render this tribute to purundaradAsa that my Father Veena RajaRao had composed (on Sept 17th, 1942) in Sahana rAga?

The pallavi goes like this:

paripAliso dAsOttama SrI purundaradAsarAya

I will provide the swara and sAhitya in kannaDa script.

From the song, can I infer that it was a sunday on which shri purandaradasa attained liberation?-It says 'ravivasar'.
The saong 'vyApara namagAyithu' reminds me of Saint Thyagarja's 'baNturItikOlu' where he asks for aa chance to serve the Lord wearing the armour of 'rOmAncha', the 'mudra billa' of rAma bhakthi and the sword of rAma nAma. The similarity of thoughts struck me.
Thank you for thoughtfully providing the devanagari text.

sreeni: could I get a copy of the notation for the song please? many thanks. i share in your disappointment at the way in which the aradhane is conducted in hampi - my experience was very similar to yours when I visited four or five years ago. even the programs in hospete are better organized. the department of art and culture owes puranadara dasa big time!!

A alternate-history-story (not so short!) about life and times of Purandara Dasa and his transformation to become a Haridasa:

Following up on the topic of Purandaradasa -

Here is an article I wrote about restaurants in 15/16th centuries, as mentioned by Purandara dasa in one of his compositions:

The article is in Kannada, though.

Ramakriya, an english transliteration may help atleast to partly understand it.

Ramakriya: I sent the original and the translation to my aunt who in turn has now forwarded it to the owners of the Udupi restaurant near the temple at Pittsburgh!

One would have thought that dOsa/ dOse is of recent origin...surprised to know that it has been in existence for 500 years or more. :)

No! They are not of recent origin at all.

There are a number of compositions of Purandara dasa where eatables are mentioned :)

On a different note reference to 'iDli' is found in the 9th century kannaDa prose work, vaDDArAdhane.
