I think it varies but from the little I have heard, for some the training initially is like practicing holding *one swara* right - for the entire class (or entire practice session).

This kind of training is for dhrupad.

Otherwise, I think it'll be a lot of practice exercises in one rAg followed by maybe a khayal in it, then some AlAp, tAn and sargam surrounding it. But usually up to an year is spent on that single rAg.

Recently came across Mr. Haresh Bakshi's site. There are some free lessons here, the rest have to be purchased: http://www.soundofindia.com/

I don't know where to get downloadable lessons, apart from the site I have already mentioned. There are some basic free lessons there for aakara sadhana from a Hindustani teacher, but they aren't exactly what Mourthy Sir is looking for. I find there is a lot more one can learn about Carnatic music on the net! Good for me!

From what I remember of conversations with my parents' (they learned Hindustani), they started with Yaman and Bhup and in the beginning learned mainly Yaman thaat ragas. They learned swarasthanas, followed by aakara saadhana and the "pakad" of the raga and various "bandish". The raga was understood through bandish. A lot of time was spent simply on Sa Pa Sa in the early morning and steadying the notes.

I remember my father maintaining tala on the tabla with the left hand and playing the tanpura with the right hand while singing.

This is khayal style, but it also depends on the gharana and teacher. Dhrupad singers do tend to spend a year on a raga from what I understand.

That is owing to the great legacies that forefathers of carnatic music have left in carnatic music. Thanks especially to the great Purandaradasa, pitAmahA of karnATaka sangIta! - we have a systematized way of teaching / learning carnatic music. Now when someone is ready to teach carnatic music, they do not have to wonder about how to teach or worry about having to create their own lessons. The teaching steps are so well established that you can even move from one teacher to another and simply continue from where you left off. You can easily find out at what level someone is in, just by using stages like - Gitam stage or Varnam stage or Kriti stage.
