In sambradaya bhajan padhati, a kirtan is sung after alapanam of one sloka or a virutham in the same raga. Hence, this Ayyappan song can also be sung after a virutham singing set to Rag.Revathi. One popular virutham on Lord Ayyappa is posted here, as a pongal gift as well as a'kanikkai' to my dear rasikas for the coming 'Makara-vilakku as well as Pongal Festivals on 14.1.2009.

There is no specific raga set for the virutham. It can be sung in any raga, preferably in the same raga in which the kirtan is to be sung.

Sri. Sankarseenu,
This song ends with only one charanam and do not have any other charanams in continuation . The one you have posted is but another song, called lagu ' Namavali ' which had been sung in the same raga, in completion of this Keerthan. This is a usual practice, in sampradaya Bhajans Padhati to sing lagu namavalis after any keerthan.

Namavalis are sung either in the same raga in which the Keertan is sung or in any other raga, but the tempo swifts to 'druta kala' (In this song you will notice that the tempo of the song changes after the charanam of the keertan). Namavalis' lyrics normally have only 4 lines and the same repeated, changing the speed/Kaalam.

The tempo of Namavalis also changes during the entire singing process of the short formed lyrics. Some bhagavatars sing namavalis in continuation of the kirtans, as in this case, or seperately, allowing the percussionist to complete the ''mutayippu ' and a brief gap given thereafter. This is normally possible only for such singers, who have a better control over everything in a music, as it is part of a technique, where the kala-pramana shifts instantaneously while singing a namavali immediately after the Kirtan, without giving any gap in between. The kaala-pramanam can go upto even 6th kaalam step by step while repeating the same lyrics in singing the Namavalis, thereby stimulating a sudden expression of Bhakti/ emotions into the rasikas, provoking them to dancing and clapping of hands out of pleasure and joy in that process.

I presume this information is useful to you.

Radhe Krishna
