Cool,
22nd would be ideal for us since second March would be just hours away from our winding up and making our way to the airport! Participating would be a bit difficult too, but can manage it.Want to be there, anyway...

Coolji good to know about the event. Will try and see if I can plan my impending trip (due sometime in Feb/March) around that time but as of now things are just too much in a state of flux...also wish I could have offered to host the event. As I've mentioned before, the colony has some lovely gardens which would be brilliant for musical activity of any kind. We must have a concert there sometime!

Today there is a report in TOI about a leopard being sighted often near the nagarbhavi circle, whereour meeting is to be held. OF course I can handle it with my walking stick, but I am afraid I will be hauled up in a court of law by the fOREST Dept for hurting the animal!!!! gobilalitha

Namaskaram,

I am new registrant to this forum although I have been the longest lurker in this group (ever since it's inception). I have vicariously and virtually followed the many interesting discussions and contributions on this forum. Alas, I have led a parallel life incognito and without being a part of the social fabric of this forum. Finally, I have registered with the forum and I would like to join this society of rasikas.

I am currently in Bangalore on a visiting professor appointment at IISc and I will be here until the end of May. I am absolutely new to Bangalore and hence, have been a little slow settling in to the Carnatic scene here. I would greatly enjoy meeting other rasikas in Bangalore (and Chennai, Mumbai). I attended one concert at Ananya in malleshwaram but would love to attend concerts at Odukattur mutt and other places in Bangalore. I am also very interested in attending the lec-dem/get-together at ISEC on Feb 22. Thanks to Jayan's blog I am aware of the Carnatic music scene but I am still getting used to the geopgraphy of Bangalore and the considerable skills needed to negotiate the auto-rickshaw scene to get around the city.

Looking forward to contributing on this forum and getting to meet other rasikas in India.

-Balaji

The next day paper carried a story that the leopard had fallen into a well and had to be rescued.
Wonder if that poor tiger then needed a walking stick?! ;)
Great story, thank you C-ji.

It was a great evening at the Institute for Socio Economic Studies, Nagarbhavi. The first time in my last 9 years in Bangalore that I have driven to this location and I must admit that I was captivated by the beauty of this place. Tall trees, beautiful flowering plants & a silent ambience.

I walked in when the program was already on and was greeted at the entrance with a warm handshake from Coolji before settling into the chair.

This was the first time I have met M V Ramana in person and I must say that he enthralled the audience with his meticulously prepeared presentation. The question and answer session was extremely lively too.

I was delighted to meet fellow rasikas, Keerthi, braindrain, Gobilalitha and his wife, Balaji, GBR, Essae Prakash, espras (Prasanna), Charulatha and her husband Ramanujam, Sandhya, Bangalore Shankar and his son Ramani, Srikanth, Krishnaprasad. (Forgive me if I have missed out any names :) )

Can only look forward to the next Bangalore meet with anticipation !

A miss indeed on my part. Simply couldn't make it. Missed the lec-dem, all that singing, company, fun and the samosas. Got a rain check (I am hoping) on the samosas from Cool...

Cienu has put it all together so well.

A very rewarding afternoon for me in that I got to meet and mingle with many rasikas whom I have known hitherto only through their postings.

The setting for the get together was perfect. An academic atmosphere pervaded; the sylvan and quiet surroundings of the ISEC Campus was a welcome change from the hustle and bustle not very far from it.

Dr Ramana is a scholar, passionate about his subject of specialization - environmental issues and the bridging of social and natural sciences. That day though, he gave a glimpse of his other passion, our music. His talk referred to its great heritage and its sustenance and growth over the years through one of the avenues, the concert platform.

The discussions and the music presentations that followed were very educative.

The credit for all this belongs to Shashi Kulkarni- our own ‘Cool the Catalyst’. We all look forward to having more such meetings with him being the catalyzing force.

S. Prasanna.

I just heard Dr Ramana's lec-dem - thoroughly interesting - I can imagine a langurous discussion on music on a lazy Sunday afternoon! Quite a tragedy that I had to give it a miss

I was additionally happy to discover that Dr. Ramana's view echo my own as far as subservience of lyrics to music is concerned. Like him, I am pretty sure that Thyagaraja himself was less fanatical about his lyrics than some of his followers...I am 100% with him when he says that incorrect splitting from a lyrical point of view is preferable to sacrifing the musical idea. I will go one step further to say ( I thikn I had already sometime back but it is worth repeating) that the Saint has deliberatetly introduced a contradiction in some of his songs - perhaps as a lesson to those who fail to understand the true purpose of art music.

Also interesting to note that the cutcheri format was not Ariyakudi's idea after all - but more a certain standardization of existing practises with an eye on the newly emerging class of rasikas. Can we have a recording of the Q&A as well - I have a feeling that it may not be fit for public boradcasting ;-)

No. We were a bunch of disciplined audience. There were some interesting questions , and knowledge sharing. Might be worth uploading..

On the whole , it was a wonderful evening in a serene atmosphere and well represented too..

These and the several other descriptions of the settings and proceedings of that afternoon seem like they were taken straight out of the pages of Pickwick Papers :) How I wish I was there!
