A basketball player, just exited the teenager tag, a science graduate from MES College Bangalore, disciple of Shri. M.T. Selvanarayana, singing with azhutham and ghambeeram in chowka kalapramana, accompanied by her uncle on the violin.

A dizzy mix of clues for Amrutha Venkatesh who offered the listeners a grand musical experience at the Swati Sangeetotsavam 2009 on Monday 12 Jan. She offered full course Tanjore meal on a banana leaf not burger on a paper plate, she offered Kancheepuram silk not nylex, she guided the listeners on a luxury cruise liner not a Ferrari.

In music, the question about the guru of the singer is often asked to find out what bhani the singer follows. How many know the name of Sachin TendulkarÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s coach? Similarly, people can be excused if they do not know who AmruthaÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s guru is.

The saveri was quite brilliant in every aspect and so was Bilahari. Before the Atana song, she announced that she was going to do neraval at such and such a place and went on to explain the meaning of the phrase. As the song proceeded she did perform neraval but it was damp squib. On occasions when she did not speak / announce the execution was brilliant. Hence the moral of the story for Amrutha is "on the stage you just sing, do not pre commit what is going to follow"

Thanks for the update Gowri...IMO, one of the most brightest and most interesting prospects in CM today. True, I have never heard of her Guru, Selvanarayana or that she is a Basketball player (although one can take an educated guess about the latter!). As I mentioned on the twitter thread, her Saveri at the Acadmy (Sri Rajagopala in that case) was a real treat...

Nice to see a photo of Mumbai Sri R. Madhavan in this thread. He is a fantastic violinist with a wonderful stage presence and great anticipation. He performs quite often in Kerala and has done so at the Navaratri Mandapam also IIRC...

May I know the expansion for IIRC !

AV's guru SN was a favourite of late SVK of Nada Inbam.I heard him there once.He is a great vidwan and due to old age his voice goes out of shruti here & there but still a discerning rasika will sit through no doubt.

This young vocalist from Bangalore has been impressing audiences everywhere. A student of science in a Bangalore college, she started performing at the age of six and has over 250 concerts to her credit.

Amrutha, who started training with M.T. Selvanarayanan of AIR-Bangalore at the age of four, continues to learn from him. Charumathi Ramachandran has also been coaching her for over nine years. Amrutha has also learnt to play the veena from Suma Sudhindra.

I have been listening to Amrutha for a few years now & must admit that she has grown into a fantastic singer !! Promising days ahead both for her & for carnatic music.

Prashant- I've learnt that Sri Madhavan is in fact Amrutha's maternal uncle
