Sikkil Gurucharan gave a zesty energetic performance at the Rathnagiriswarar temple. The tempo never flagged during the centire 2.5 hour concert and he was able to inspire and enthuse the accompanists to raise the overall quality of the concert. In spite of it being a "temple" concert, full justice was done to the presentation in terms of choice of kritis and overall preparation.

There are two ways to do an alapana.
One is to quickly and unambiguously reveal the raga in the opening seconds and then go on a slower elaboration binge. The other is to slowly build up the foundation and let the raga reveal herself as she pleases in time over the course of the alapana.
For the main piece, it appeared to me that Sikkl Gurucharan chose the latter route, So for a short duration, we (me and the couple of mamas sitting by me who put up lovingly with my torture {Hope aparna is not reading this}) were left wondering if it was Madyamavati, Devamanohari or Sudhdha Saveri and it was clear only after a few minutes how the cookie was crumbling.
