TNS with MC on violin, Thrichur Narendran on Mrdhangam and Anirudh Athreya on kanjira.
It was a concert with a difference in as much as all the krthis except one or two were not heard quite for sometime.
MC as usual contributed to the richness by his playing.

The song list is as follows:

1.Vanajakshi-kalyani thana varnam- TNS sung kalpana svara at the end which was wonderful.
2. shanka chakra gadha panim- poorna chandrika- Muthuswami Dhikshithar -svara sung at 'pornachandrikanga,' which was poorna with all angas.
3, orjupuju-kannadagoula -Thyagaraja- sung with appropriate bhava.
4.Raga alapana poorvikalyani- the krthi was surprisingly 'paramapavanarama,' of Poochi iyengar. Neraval svara was at 'kanakambaradhara karunanvitha,' a weaving of kankambara , golden carment as well as depicting the karuna of Rama.
5.manasunilpa-abhogi- Thyagaraja- with svara the end, the krthi being sung with the iright bhava with which the krthi was composed., especially in the pallavi and the line 'sogasugaandrakorithe' in the charanam.
6. Jalandhara supeedasthe-valaji- Muthiah bhagavathar
7. Mainpiece- thodi raga alapana which was a marble mansion polished slab by slab. The raga as the others byTNS was ever neuvo. The nadasvara pidis and the grahabhedha in sankarabharanam at mantharasthayi should be heard to be believed.
8. ninne namminaanu with svara at kanchadalaayathaakshi
9 Thani by Sri Narendran and Sri Anirudh which was very good the youngster matching the senior in skill
10.Ashtapadhi-'paSyathi disi disi 'in traditional sankarabharanam.
11. sloka 'he krishna dvarakaavaasin,' the prayer of Draupdi in the assembly of kurus, a very moving one in superb subhapanthuvarali.
12.Chod dhiya -bajan by kabir in subhapanthuvarali, the raga most suited to the bhava and sung beautifully in hindustani style, rich in bhava.
13. Thillana in bilahari.
14. thiruppugaz
15. mangalam

TNS was not in good shape that day.He was coughing at times. He could have allowed TNS Krishna to assist him more

TNS was in very good form that day, purvikalyani and thodi were full of aesthetic. Since he coughed does it mean that he was nt in good shape?? His voice was in very good form and he rendered thodi in thristhayis. The concert was filled with Bhava and he made all of us shed tears in his Supapanthuvarali Bhajan. A wonderful concert indeed

Thos who have gone to Hamsadvani recently must have noticed the facelift given to the auditorium now. It is very good and I think they have not completed yet. BY the way the above is my factual review of he concert. My rapturous review can be found in my sulekha blog!

Your 'factual' review is both interesting and informative. And your sense of humor too!

Saroja mami,

The song list is really nice, Yes it does seem to be a set of songs not heard in the recent past in his concerts.

Naam Japan Kyun chod diya - is traditionally sung by many in Desh, as I have heard it. With TNS it could fit into any raga, given his mastery.!

We can well imagine your rapturous state of mind, having heard this concert ! Pity we had to miss it.

Is the auditorium indoor and ac now or still outdoor?

It is still outdoor but there is a ceiling and it is not open air.Flooring hasbeen done and no more mud floor with creepeies crawling and mosquitoes are much less ,may be owing to the weather. The stage is also given a facelift but the curtains are not there. Perhaps it will come later. Though it was there for almost ayear the portrait of Sri Ramchandran, founder president of Hamsadvani, who passed away in 2007, is imposing and appears asthough he is there alive enjoying the music.

I loved the open air hamsadhwani, ofcourse during some days when it rains the concerts gets cancelled . The good news is the ceiling that is built now is quite high, so in a way the excess sound will get easily absorbed.

SR,

It is really enjoyable to see a song list that is colorful and ur remarks for each is equally good.As for the bhajan,I have heard TNS sung that in Patdeep also.

But IMO Valaji succeeding Abhogi is not such a good choice. But TNS is known for his experiments.

I would have really enjoyed had I been present.

Sri.T.N.S. was having problem with his throat and was coughing often. In spite of that there were many brillient flashes in the raga alapanas of poorvikalyani and thodi.T.N..S.Krishna was also coughing and though there was a mike in front of him he was sitting slightly away from the mike.he could not be heard. The new auditorium looks nice but we miss the open air concerts.Semmangudi Mama when he was speaking in a function at hamsadhwani said not to construct any hall.Open air atmosphere is very nice and you dont have this in any other sabha. But there are some problems during rainy season. The absence of Music Trinity pictures on the stage is felt as they used to be there on the old stage on all concert days

Hamsadvani has a very poor acoustic system, Balancing was poor, at times the vocal and violin was not heard, The authorities should look in to the matter seriously.

TNS was coughing very rarely but his voice was crystal clear and he presented prestine thodi and the krithi ninnenammi in thodi was very asthetic and filled with Bhava. Supapanthuvarali bhajan needs special mention and it is the highlight of the concert
