Vidushi Manda sudharani - vocal
Vid B Raghuram - violin
Vid Jayachandra Rao - Mrudangam

BTM Cultural academy - 10.30am, 22 Feb 09 - Ragamalika RTP concert

1. maha ganapathim - naatai - chatusra ekam - muthuswami dikshitar (brief alapana, swara @ maha ganapathim)
2. RTP - shankarabharanam, kalyani, valachi, kanada - adi 2 kalai
pallavi - shankarabharana veni kamala nayani kalyani valachi vachina ramani kanada rasikamani

eduppu - 1/2 akshram, pallavi fits in 2 avarthanam of adi talam
3. teerada vilayattu pillai - ragamalika - subhramanya bharati

The raga alapana was done for each of the ragam, and violin response was also equally good. Towards end of tanam, she performed tanam for each of the ragam one after another with good transition.

pallavi was sung in adi talam - over two cycle. It would have been good if she would have sung in 4 kalai, not sure of exact details, i think, i was listening to a pallavi in two avarthanams first time. Hope someone can clarify whether this is general practice. There was no trikalam done, but swaras were sung different nadais. While singing swaras for each of the ragas, she picked up pallavi line at appropriate places (example - kamala nayani for kalyani swaras). Tani was brief, for about 5 minutes. There was decent audience on a sunday morning, prominent ones being Vidwan Shankar and his son.

It is not wrong to sing pallavis over multiple avartanams. on most of them, there would also be multiple aridis.

Concert was for 1-1/2 hours. It started at 10.30am, and ended around 12 noon. Sure, the raga part was awsome, it is not easy to sing these 4 ragas together. However, i feel, the laya part could have been better - either a different talam, and with anulomam, pratilomam, trikalam, with different nadais, ragamalika swarams etc. Since this being a special RTP concert, the expectation might be high, and the artist is definitely capable. May be, she performed few laya aspects, which i could have missed out.
