paTTabhiramA pandit@rAgasudha hall on Feb 22nd,2009
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
accompanied by violin - vv ravi mannArgudi easwaran - mridangam and anirudh Athreya -
kanjira, organized by charsur

At the beginning of slokham , an elderly gentleman turned towards me and said yAr intha singer (who is the singer)and who is his guru,
I just gave a small inlay that was distributed .

Then that person remarked , nalla Padran en ippadi pAmbAttum neliyaran.
I said theriyala sir!, "avan kaiya kAla asachan paravaillai , kayutha mikekku nera vetchundu pAdinA porum"
(When that elderly gentleman asked why is he shaking so much like a snake, I said I don't know , I dont mind if he moves his hands and legs but he moving away from mike should be avoided)

Out popped mdr's sAgara sayana , and pattabhirAma sang beautifully. This is my second concert that I am listening , one when Shri UKS was playing and the other in this concert with mannArgudi easwaran . Both of them were very skillful in their play, despite the singer moving away from mike , their play never drowned the singer's voice.

9A. slOkham "ramA nArayana.. hari bhakthi" - bhAgeshri - ?
9B. sAgara sayana vibHO- bhAgeshri - mdr

For the first 2 no's in begadA and shanmughapriya , pattabhirama was moving too much away from the mike many a times(incidentally he had even double mike) and there was not much continous music.

But from dinamani vamsa the concert was very good to excellent overall. PantuvarAli was slight vOttam and the yk kAmbodhi was very good(though it had a slight sbharanam tinge in the early alApanai),I lost the neraval line in yk kAMbOdhi as he was moving away from the mike.

The best of the concert was the nalinakAnthi (swaras were exceptionally high in manOdharmam ). The tOdi alApanai was excellent. The krithi in tOdi (not my favourite one)was also higly classical and was very good.

1. Intha chAlamu(varnam)(R) - begadA - Veenai kuppier
2. siddi vinAyagam (S)- shanmughapriyA - MD
3. dinamani vamsa - harikAmbOdhi -T
4. ninnE nammi nAnurA (R N S) - pantuvarAli -T
"veda sAstra purAna"- neraval for 4 mins
5. hecharika gA(R N S) - yadhukulakAmbOdhi - T

6. manavyAlakincharA (R S) - nalinakAnthi -T
7A. ninnE namminAnu sadA (R N S T) - tOdi - SS
neraval in "kamAkshi kanchi dalayA sAkshi" for 11 mins
13 mins alApanai, 6 mins violin return, and 9 mins of swaras
7B. tani for 12 mins
8. marubAri - kamAs

10. thillana dheem tanana "sekhara sugunAgara??" - kAnada - Lji Help??
11. pavamAna (mangalam) -sowrAshtram -T

The violinist vv ravi was mediocre to good , easwaran was brilliant he just lifted the concert with his superb anticipation , his finger beat had an outstanding telepathy link to pattAbhi rama's neck ;). anirudh gave a very good support though their tani was just not as great as their support they gave during songs.

In short a very good concert , this musician should improve his mike etiquette(cut his swirls a bit). Certainly pattAbhiramA is an artist to watch out as there is an immense classical touch :).

I've listened to Shri Mannargudi Easwaran only once with Prof. T N Krishnan and I am a fan ever since. I've also seen him at a competition he was a judge for.

And Rajesh, it should be kazhutthu. And vinAyakam.

He recently sang hecharikkaga submain in IIT Madras Music Club's Purandara Dasa day too.

It must have been difficult to put up with todi after pantuvarali, especially as the todi kriti isn't your favourite.

I do like ninne namminanu (SS is my favourite among the trinity!), but my favourite lines are "kanna talli gada, biddayani kanikaramentaina leda".

Rajesh,
Thanks as usual for your 'yours alone' review. I have heard that he is very good. Haven't herd him in concert so far. Yes, he has to stay close to the mike. Would have been interesting to watch, had he sung punnAgavarALi.
A pity, I did not hear fellow-forumite ME even once this season. Missed his bro too at Prashanth's concert...

srIkara sugunAkara is the kAnada tillana of PUchi ayyangAr; sung so often by KVN.
